I highly recommend John Barnett and Maygan Hiatt for the school board. John has been on the board for 12 years. He is trustworthy, honest, and downright a good guy. He cares about the students and people in our community.
Maygan has been a member of the PTA for the past 2 years. She has lived here since 8th grade, and now raising her own children here.
Both John and Maygan understands the challenges that families face in our district and our passionate about ensuring that every child receives a quality education. Maygan brings fresh ideas and a strong commitment to collaboration, making her an excellent addition to the board alongside John.

Together, they represent a balance of experience and innovation. As John Barnett’s son—and as a gay man—I want to speak directly to the community about the kind of person my Papa is.
He’s my father, yes—but more than that, he’s the man who’s been my biggest supporter, my steady presence, and someone who has always led with love. And right now, I feel it’s important to speak up on his behalf.

Lately, there have been accusations suggesting that my Papa is homophobic or that he’s responsible for banning books. I understand how easily things can get twisted in the public eye, but these claims are not only false—they’re deeply painful. They don’t reflect the man I know. And they certainly don’t reflect the values he’s lived by for as long as I’ve known him.

My Papa officiated my wedding to my husband. That wasn’t a performance. It was one of the most meaningful moments of my life—made even more powerful by the fact that the man standing up there, guiding us through our vows, was the same man who had always accepted, supported, and celebrated me exactly as I am.
He and my mom raised five kids, all of us going through the Siuslaw School District. He’s not just running for school board—he’s lived this. He’s packed the lunches, gone to the parent-teacher conferences, sat in the bleachers, helped with homework, and walked alongside us through every step of our school journeys. His passion for this district comes from experience, from heart, and from a desire to make it better for every family, not just his own.

My Papa isn’t flashy. He’s not in this for attention or applause. He shows up. He listens. He works hard. He asks the tough questions and weighs every decision with care, fairness, and a commitment to students and educators. That’s what real leadership looks like.
If you want someone who understands our schools not just as an observer but as a deeply invested parent and community member—someone with integrity, compassion, and real-life experience—you won’t find anyone better than my father, my Papa.
