Thank you to the Worcester County Conservation District for this initiative, for inviting Ruben Parrilla to be part of it, and for highlighting the work of NOFA/Mass.

Healthy soils are the foundation of resilient landscapes, thriving ecosystems, and a more sustainable future.

Check out Ruben Parrilla alongside Trevor Smith and Marie Chieppo in this insightful mini-documentary on ecological landscaping and the importance of fostering healthy soils.

The video explores how working with nature—not against it—can transform our landscapes into resilient ecosystems. From restoring soil biology and supporting biodiversity to improving water retention and building climate resilience, healthy soil is at the heart of it all.

We are grateful for the opportunity to contribute to this important conversation and to share the role that organic land management and soil stewardship play in creating healthier communities and ecosystems.

Time is running out to move the FARM Bill to the House floor before formal session ends on July 31!

We need your help! The Massachusetts Food System Collaborative is calling on our partners to reach out to House leadership, to ask them to move the FARM bill, H.4854, out of House Ways and Means to the House floor for debate and passage so the bill can be put into law.

This bill is urgently needed to support our local food system. It includes:
-codifying FSIG into law,
-protecting the whole farm in the APR program,
-establishing a Next Generation Farmer Fund,
-including the food system in emergency planning,
-establishing a Vacant Lots to Urban Agriculture Fund, and more!

Legislators are hearing about a variety of priorities right now, so we need to make sure the FARM Bill doesn’t get lost in the noise. Please keep calling!

A sneak peek from last week’s hands-on Soil Health & Farm Resilience Workshop at Stony Hill Farm

Last week at Stony Hill Farm, farmers joined NOFA/Mass, CISA, and American Farmland Trust for a hands-on workshop exploring how soil health practices can build resilience to drought, flooding, heat, and other extreme weather.

A highlight of the day was learning from Caro Roszell, Soil Health Program Manager at American Farmland Trust, as she assessed the soil structure and aggregate stability of a soil clod in the field. As Caro explained, Stony Hill Farm has seen increased aggregate stability and improved soil structure since implementing more soil health practices.

Participants explored different soil structure types, pore sizes, and aggregation while learning how practices like cover cropping, reduced tillage, and mulching can strengthen soil health and support long-term farm viability.
