As Music in our Schools Month comes to a close, let's look back at what our Musical Chargers have done since the semester began!
1. On January 17, our Instrumental Musical Chargers went to Michigan School Band & Orchestra Association Solo & Ensemble Festival at Imlay City High School. We sent seventeen events, with many students doing more than one, and seven received a first division rating to qualify for states!
2. On January 28, one of our Singing Chargers attended MSVMA Solo and Ensemble, receiving a first division rating and qualifying for states!
3. On February 4, our Swinging Charger Jazz Band performed at Cliff Bells with the Swing Syndicate Big Band, an amazing opportunity for our students to perform as a real gigging band in the heart of Detroit!
4. On February 7, five of our Powers Catholic High School students and one of our Holy Family Catholic School participated in the annual District 3 Honors Band, creating a middle school and high school band with students from Swartz Creek all the way to Port Huron Northern. The students received their music and learned it in one day, putting in a performance at Holly High School that evening.
5. On February 19, the students in our Powers Catholic Wind Ensemble, as well as the students from Holy Rosary Catholic School, St. John Vianney Catholic School, and Holy Family Catholic School performed in their Pre-Festival concert, performing the music they would later take to District Band Festival. We were proud to have Mrs. Heather Wickman, recently retired band and orchestra director from Livonia Stevenson High School and the 2026 MSBOA Orchestra Director of the Year, come and clinic each group on stage.
6. On February 25, Professor Doug Burtch from the University of Michigan-Flint came to clinic our band students prior to their performance at district band festival.
7. On February 28, the Powers Catholic Wind Ensemble attended District 3 Band and Orchestra Festival at Carman Ainsworth High School, receiving a strong second division rating.
8. On March 11, our Swinging Chargers and the state qualifying soloists and ensembles performed at our annual sing and swing concert.
9. On March 14, our Powers Catholic Chamber Singers hosted the Third Annual Powers Catholic Choir Invitational, welcoming the choirs from Goodrich High School, LakeVille High School, and Charyl Stockwell Preparatory Academy to perform with then in a day of music making, starting at Powers and ending with a performance at St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Downtown Flint! Leading the combined choirs and giving clinics to each group was Director of Choirs at Central Michigan University, Dr. Amon Eady.
10. On March 17, the choirs from Powers Catholic, Holy Rosary and St. John Vianney participated in a joint mass at Holy Rosary to celebrate St. Patrick's Day.
11. From March 19-21, many of our musical chargers participated in the amazing production of High School Musical, whether on stage or behind it. The students were definitely Soaring, Flying and Breaking Free!
12. And finally, on March 21, four of our MSBOA state qualifying events attended State Solo & Ensemble at Midland. All four events received a first division rating and one of our soloists was nominated to go on to the Outstanding Soloists competition at Eastern Michigan University next month!
We are beyond proud of our Musical Chargers! Thank you for continuing to support music in our schools as we continue the tradition of musical excellence at Powers Catholic!
