Would decisions still be made?

Would people know what to do?

Would expectations still be followed?

Or would everything wait until you returned?

I've learned that being involved in everything doesn't necessarily mean you're leading effectively.

Sometimes it means we haven't developed the people or systems around us.

🎓 In education, principals shouldn't have to personally resolve every issue that comes through the office.

💼 In any industry, managers shouldn't be the only people capable of making routine decisions.

The goal isn't to become less involved.

It's to become more intentional about where your involvement is truly needed.

Before you start trying to do everything, look at your priorities.

What actually requires your attention?

What can someone else handle?

And what doesn't need to happen today?

Being busy isn't always a sign of being productive.

Be intentional with your time, your energy, and your leadership.

💙 October is National Principals Month! 💙

I want to take a moment to recognize principals everywhere, those currently serving and those who have retired. ❤️

Being a principal is not easy! Some days you leave the building feeling accomplished, and other days you leave wondering if you made a difference at all. There are decisions to make, people to support, challenges to work through, and expectations coming from every direction. And somehow, you still have to find the strength to show up and lead the next day.

👏🏾 To my fellow principals, I simply want to say THANK YOU! And on those days when it feels like you’re carrying everything on your shoulders, remember that you’re not alone. Give yourself some grace. You don’t have to have all the answers, and you certainly won’t get everything right every day. None of us do!

I also want to acknowledge the principals who came before us. ❤️ When I reflect on my own journey, I know that some of the leadership qualities I carry today were shaped by principals I encountered as a child and throughout my career. Some taught me through their words, others through their actions, and some probably never realized the impact they had on my life.

And that’s something I hope we never forget. We don’t always get to see the difference we’ve made in someone’s life.

So whether you’re in your first year, your twentieth year, or enjoying retirement, I hope you know that your years of service have meant something.

💐 Happy National Principals Month! Keep leading, keep learning, keep encouraging one another, and please don’t forget to take care of yourself along the way.

Here's something I want every leader to think about before Monday.

What responsibility are you still carrying that someone else should own?

Sometimes we become so accustomed to solving problems that we don't recognize when we've become part of the problem.

🎓 In education, that might mean handling every student concern instead of allowing your leadership team to follow established systems.

💼 In any industry, it might mean making decisions your team members have already been trained and empowered to make.

Delegation doesn't mean you stop being accountable.

It means you stop confusing accountability with doing everything yourself.

This week's challenge: Identify one responsibility you can transfer with clear expectations and appropriate support.

Some things need a plan.

Some things need a conversation.

And some things simply need to be released.

You cannot begin a new week refreshed if you're determined to carry every burden from the last one.

Take time to pray, reflect, rest, and prepare your mind for what's ahead.

Be present at home.

Be present with your family.

Be present with your friends.

Be present with yourself.

Leadership can become so consuming that even when we leave work, our minds never really leave.

The emails can wait.

The Monday list can wait.

The problem you're trying to solve can wait.

Today, don't just be available. Be present.

Enjoy breakfast without checking the email.

Have the conversation without watching the clock.

Laugh.

Rest.

Be wherever your feet are.

Your title doesn't need you every minute of every day.

Or could it also be encouragement?

🎓 In education, don't only enter classrooms when you're evaluating something.

💼 In any industry, don't only check in when performance is off.

Catch people doing something right.

Name it.

Thank them.

Then keep moving.

Leadership presence shouldn't always feel heavy.

Sometimes it should feel like encouragement.
