In honor of tonight’s autumn equinox, we’re launching our Fall Farm School Days!

🐝 Life on the Farm: Honey Bee begins THIS FRIDAY, with additional sessions on Saturday and Tuesday. This is a unique opportunity for students ages 9–18 to suit up, explore a working honey bee colony, and experience the honey harvest—from hive to jar.

* This may be our last time robbing honey this year, so we are offering 3 separate days!

🦗 Life on the Farm: Bugs! for ages 5–9 follows next Thursday.

Just 6 students per session—and the first one is only days away.

🌿Life on the Farm: Reproduction in Flora & Fauna 🐝🐓🌱

On September 18th, we’re opening the farm for another Farm School Day at Appalachian Cottage School—and we have 4 seats available.

Participants will explore all we have to offer here on our 5-acre hobby farm as we observe and document the ordered rhythms of the plants and animals as summer comes to an end.

Our Farm School Days are intentionally small—just six students—so there is plenty of room for conversation, curiosity, and following the interesting questions that come up along the way.

A Charlotte Mason-inspired Farm School experience introducing engineering and physical science through curiosity and experimentation.

Students will spend the morning asking questions, solving problems, testing ideas, and discovering scientific principles through meaningful experiences on our 5-acre hobby farm.

🌿 Summer Farm School is now open for enrollment!

WHO: Students ages 9–14

WHAT: A Charlotte Mason-inspired Farm School experience featuring guided nature study, hands-on outdoor investigations, watercolor brush drawing, and meaningful discussion.

Our inaugural Farm School Day, Life on the Farm: Reproduction in Flora & Fauna, will explore the distinct ways plants and animals reproduce. Students will observe and interact with a variety of farm animals, including goats, rabbits, chickens, ducks, barn cats, and honeybee colonies, while comparing their life cycles and reproductive strategies.

Through a guided nature walk around our 5-acre hobby farm, students will investigate:

• Mosses and ferns (non-seed plants)

• Asexual reproduction

• Vegetative propagation

• Pollination and the role of pollinators

• Self-pollinating and cross-pollinating plants

• Plant reproduction through flowers, seeds, spores, runners, tubers, and cuttings

The day will conclude with lunch and a brushdrawing lesson followed by a respectful, factual, and age-appropriate discussion of "the birds and the bees" through the lens of biology and life on the farm, helping students recognize the remarkable design, order, and diversity found throughout the natural world.

Families and friends gathered together this past Sunday to celebrate an amazing year of hard work and lots of fun. The children participated in a program, reciting poetry and scripture, singing hymns and folk songs, and then received their completion certificates before feasting and playing!

We are so thankful for each student and their family! It was such a great year! A big thanks to one of the moms, Morgan, for making this video for us!
