“Why should I use the red light setting on my headlamp when viewing the night sky?”

Red lights are key to an ideal dark sky experience! Here’s why they’re a must-have for optimal night sky viewing:

Preserve Night Vision: Red light has a longer wavelength, which helps maintain your night vision. Unlike white light, it won’t disrupt your eyes’ adaptation to darkness, allowing you to immerse yourself in the night sky fully.

Protect Dark Adaptation: Using a red headlamp minimizes the risk of light pollution. It prevents excess glare and helps preserve the natural darkness of the night sky, ensuring an optimal stargazing experience for you and others — especially while at Star Party near the telescopes.

Respect for Wildlife: Red light is less likely to disturb nocturnal creatures, as they are less sensitive to this color spectrum. By using a red headlamp, you can appreciate the night sky while minimizing disruption to wildlife habitats.

Enhance Observations: Red light allows you to read star charts, adjust equipment, and take notes without affecting your eyes’ sensitivity to the dark sky. Did you know? It typically takes around 20 to 30 minutes for your eyes to reach their maximum sensitivity to low light conditions. During this period, your pupils dilate, allowing more light to enter and making those faint stars pop like glittering diamonds.

PRO TIP: You can turn on “dark sky mode” on your phone! iPhone: Accessibility > Display & Text Size > Color Filters > Color Tint > Slide the intensity bar to your choosing. Android: Open your phone’s settings app > tap display > night light.

Want to take a photo of the Milky Way and only have your iPhone (iPhone 12 or later)? Grab a tripod and a phone mount, click on the dark sky button (looks like a moon), and slide the exposure to 30 seconds. You’ll be amazed with the result!
