🚌🛑 When Do You Stop for a School Bus?

As students head back to school, remember: school bus safety is everyone’s responsibility.

Florida law requires motorists to STOP for a school bus displaying its stop signal, with specific exceptions on divided highways.

Please take a close look at photo and familiarize yourselves.

➡️ Slow down. Stay alert. Watch for children. And when in doubt—STOP.

Let’s work together to keep our students, school bus drivers, and communities safe. 💛🚌

INGLIS
Thank you to the local DOT Department, we have a school bus pull-off lane for the bus stop located at Village Pines RV Campground & Mobile Home Community. Traffic must stop behind the school bus when it has its student stoplights and stop arms deployed. Some of Levy County’s school buses are equipped with an extended stop arm that reaches out 6 feet into the lane parallel to the school bus. Some buses are equipped with outside cameras and we share these videos with local authorities when the bus is passed during the student stop.

School starts back for Levy County students one week from today—Monday, August 10!
Sheriff Bobby McCallum and the Levy County Sheriff's Office wants to remind everyone that means school buses will once again be on our roadways, safely transporting students to and from school each day.

Please expect heavier traffic and a few extra delays during the first couple of weeks as everyone gets back into their school routine. The Levy County Sheriff's Office will be enforcing school bus and school zone traffic laws.

Most importantly, watch for flashing school zone lights and obey the reduced speed limits. Those speed limits are there to protect our children.

Do you know when you're required to stop?
🛑 Two-lane road: All vehicles must stop.
🛑 Multi-lane road with no median: All lanes must stop.
🛑 Divided highway with an unpaved space (5+ feet), raised median, or physical barrier: Only traffic traveling in the same direction as the bus must stop. Opposing traffic may continue with caution.

Let's all do our part to help make this a safe and successful start to the new school year. Have a great year, Levy County students!
