The Jack Tale Players come full circle--to the place where Rex Stephenson did some of his earliest folktale research 50 years ago. He said he worked with 11 students and Roddy Moore when he started in 1975.

🎶Three Ferrum College Jack Tale Players recently took the stage at one of the nation's most iconic institutions!🎶

On July 10, they performed at the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C., as part of a special event concluding the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) Summer Institute for Higher Education Faculty focused on the Federal Writers' Project. Professor of English Tina Hanlon helped introduce the 50-year history of the Jack Tale Players.

The performance was made possible through Director Emily Blankenship-Tucker's participation in the three-week NEH Institute. Participants wrapped up a week of in-person research in the Library of Congress's extensive folklore archives with presentations by several scholars—followed by a lively Jack Tale Players performance celebrating the rich storytelling traditions of Appalachia.

Congratulations to the Jack Tale Players for representing Ferrum College and sharing the region's folklife in the world’s largest library!

We’re proud to see this recognition of our local legends, Lost and Found. Gene Parker, one of the group’s original members, wrote the iconic “Struttin’ to Ferrum.” Gene was honored for his contributions to the musical culture of Ferrum at our 2023 Grand Ole Ferrum Opry. Congratulations to the band!

Formed in Virginia in the early 1970s, The Lost & Found became one of bluegrass music’s most respected bands. The original lineup featured Allen Mills, Dempsey Young, Gene Parker, and Roger Handy, whose distinctive sound, strong harmonies, and dedication to traditional bluegrass helped shape the band’s lasting legacy.
