🏛️ New NC Law: Armed Staff Can Be Approved in Private and Religious Schools starting Dec. 1

⚖️ A new North Carolina law takes effect Dec. 1 allowing certain employees and volunteers at private and religious-based schools to carry a concealed handg[]n or stun g[]n on school property — something that was previously prohibited statewide. The change is aimed at expanding on-site security options for private schools, especially those without their own police or resource officers.

👩‍🏫 Before this law, all school grounds in NC — public, private, and religious — were strict no-carry zones for staff and volunteers. Even with a concealed-carry permit, adults could not legally bring it onto campus. Schools could not authorize staff to carry, even if they wanted additional protection.

📘 Key changes under the new law:
✅ Private and religious schools may now authorize select employees or volunteers to carry a concealed handg[] or stun g[]n on school grounds.
✅ Only individuals with valid concealed-carry permits are eligible for authorization.
✅ Schools must provide written approval and maintain internal policies outlining training, safety procedures, and who is authorized.
✅ Parents must be informed annually that the school participates in the program.
✅ All approved individuals must complete state-required safety and firearm-handling training.

⚖️ Supporters say the law gives smaller private schools more flexibility to respond to threats, especially in areas where law-enforcement response times may be longer. They argue it can expand immediate on-site protection for students and staff.

🧐 Critics warn that adding fi****ms to school environments could increase risks of accidents, mishandling, or theft. They also worry about varying training standards between schools, and whether private facilities have the oversight systems in place to safely manage armed personnel.

🏛️ As this new policy begins Dec. 1, private schools across North Carolina will decide individually whether to participate. The statewide impact will depend on how many schools adopt the option and how carefully they build their safety procedures around the new authority.
