One week to go until National GEAR UP Week!

To gear up (pun intended) for the celebrations, today we're sharing the size and scope of GEAR UP nationally, because our GEAR UP Longwood Class of 2031 students are part of a much bigger community!

📊 By the numbers:
💰 $388 million appropriated by Congress for GEAR UP in Fiscal Year 2025
🤝 173 active GEAR UP grants in 2025–2026, 136 of them partnership grants just like ours
🎓 588,068 students served across 3,137 schools in almost every state in 2023–2024

🤝 Partnership Spotlight:
GEAR UP Longwood + CoolSpeak

Sometimes students need more than someone telling them what they should do. They need someone who helps them believe in what they can do.

Several of our GEAR UP Longwood partner divisions have welcomed CoolSpeakers this year, challenging students to show up for themselves, lead well, set goals, and keep going when things get hard.

And the partnership doesn’t stop at school! 🚌 GEAR UP Longwood team members also had the opportunity to hit the road on a CoolSpeak CoolTrip bus tour with Halifax County Public Schools, experiencing firsthand the energy, connection, and inspiration CoolSpeak brings to students. We plan to hit the road again later this month with another partner division!

Whether in a school or on the road, the message is one we want our Class of 2031 scholars to carry with them: Keep showing up. Keep growing. Keep dreaming. ✨

🏁 TWO WEEKS TO GO!

The countdown continues! National GEAR UP Week is just TWO weeks away! 🎉

September 21st–25th, our GEAR UP Longwood community will join GEAR UP programs across the country to celebrate the students, families, educators, and partners who make this work possible.

Across our 14 partner school divisions, plans are taking shape to celebrate the Class of 2031 and keep them thinking about where their road can lead after high school.

College. Career. Military. Trades. Entrepreneurship. Whatever their destination, GEAR UP is about helping students recognize that their choices today can open doors tomorrow.

And in just two weeks, we get to celebrate that journey together!

You never know when and where you’ll hear a GEAR UP story…. 💙🎓

While on a college tour at VCU, the GEAR UP Longwood team had one of those unexpected moments that reminds us exactly why this work matters.

A VCU staff member spotted our GEAR UP shirts and stopped to introduce herself. After making a Longwood connection (we’re all Longwood alumni), she shared something that immediately made our day:

She was a GEAR UP student, too. 👏👏🥳

She participated in GEAR UP while attending Hopewell City Public Schools and told us she still remembers the college tours, activities, and opportunities she experienced through the program.

And now? She is a Longwood University alumna working at VCU as an Assistant Director for Undergraduate Recruitment-helping other students explore their own paths to college. 🤩

Talk about a full-circle moment.

The GEAR UP Longwood team couldn’t have been more excited. Here we were, visiting a college campus with today’s students, and standing in front of us was someone who had once been the GEAR UP student on the college tour herself.

GEAR UP isn’t just about one field trip, one activity, or one school year. It’s about opening doors, expanding possibilities, and planting seeds that can continue growing for years.

Sometimes, you even get lucky enough to run into the proof. 💙

In two weeks, as part of Appomattox Middle School's Gear Up efforts, Mr. Zach Gowen will give a presentation to interested parents and family members in the Appomattox community. Dinner and on-site childcare will be provided for those who register and attend.

Zach Gowen has climbed the highest peaks—both literal and figurative—and has overcome some of life’s toughest obstacles. After losing his left leg to cancer at the age of 8, Zach defied the odds and became the world’s first amputee WWE Superstar, captivating audiences with his determination, athleticism, and heart.

Zach’s message helps audiences see that it is how you climb to rise above your own mountains that matters most. Whether he’s inspiring young people to dream bigger or guiding educators to reconnect with their purpose, Zach proves that resilience, service, and mindset can turn any challenge into a triumph.

Come out for the evening! Thursday, September 17, at Appomattox Middle School. Dinner will be served during sign-in from 5:30pm-6:00pm. Mr. Gowen will present from 6:30-7:00.

Vision boards, big dreams, and even bigger futures! 😎

On Monday night, GEAR UP Longwood headed to Nottoway Middle School for Vision Your Future, a GEAR UP family night all about imagining what's possible through high school and beyond.

Armed with magazines, stickers, markers, and imagination, students and families got creative, cutting, pasting, and dreaming up boards that captured their goals, passions, and plans for the future. The result? Vision boards bursting with color and possibility! 🎨✨

But this isn't goodbye to those boards just yet. The Class of 2031 will get theirs back at the start of senior year, a chance to look back on how far they've come and keep pushing forward toward those big dreams. 🚀

It's September 1? Do you know what that means?

It's time to start your engines... National GEAR UP Week kicks off September 21st!

The GEAR UP Longwood community will be celebrating right alongside GEAR UP programs across the entire nation.

GEAR UP Week reminds our students that they are part of something bigger. Thousands of students across the country are on this same journey with them, working to build a college-going culture and get ready for what comes after high school.

Our Class of 2031 scholars are just starting 8th grade, and that is exactly the right time to plant the seeds. Early exposure to college and career options, strong academic habits, and a little encouragement now can help carve out a clear path to postsecondary success down the road.

Stay tuned as we showcase how our 14 partner school divisions are celebrating GEAR UP Week within their own walls.
