Sharing a quick update to my life aside and unrelated to the Naked and Afraid series. Yesterday was a huge milestone for me: I completed Day 90 of the“Warrior PATHH” post-traumatic growth program, hosted by the Travis Mills Foundation in Rome, Maine. I truly cannot believe I made it to where I am today, and I would not have been able to do it alone. The challenges we face can either drown us, or be used to fuel the fire inside of you. Every new day, you make the choice of what attitude you will carry and what effort you will make to move forward- will you let your reaction be relegated and your moments of struggle keep weighing heavy- or face them and not be afraid? Many thanks to all of the Travis Mills PATHH guides, staff, volunteers, and to the 6 SISTERS I made during the program. PATHH not only saved my life, but it made me find lessons and gifts in my struggle. Vulnerability is strength. I am not a victim of what happened to me, I am a warrior. Now, I have all of the tools I need to get through anything, thanks to all of you. “Opportunities to find deeper powers within ourselves come when life seems most challenging.” — Joseph Campbell, The Hero’s Journey

Day 33/90 of PTG. Avoidance. I avoided social media for over a year. My plan moving forward involves sharing my growth for whoever is struggling too. You dont really know that you’ve hit rock bottom until youre there. It’s ok to ask for help, we cant overcome everything alone.

Avoiding people:
-The traumatic months I went through affected my relationship with my partner, friends, family, volunteer work, hobbies. I lived through a constant campaign of emotional manipulation and misery, fell into an extreme isolation and never thought I could go back to the “normal” me. I stopped talking about what happened to me because I felt like a burden and I felt like no one could relate. I didnt want to push my negative energy onto anyone or want anyone feel sorry for me.

Avoiding triggers:
-I was terrified to post on social media because I was living in a substantive fear of being tracked, followed, and preyed upon. I lost all trust in authority figures, trust of my own mind and perceptions of reality and questioned my own memories of the trauma. I couldn’t be near electronics without fear of being recorded or tracked. I couldn’t go anywhere without checking for hidden devices and staring into electrical outlets and plants and picture frames and ceiling tiles. I did not feel safe in my own home or in my vehicles. I experienced a cruel and horrid emotional manipulation from people who I highly respected. Paranoia consumed me. I wanted to run away from intrusive reminders + technology + from the people who hurt me. I wanted to throw it all in the cold frozen river water, including myself.

Avoiding feelings:
- I was a numb, empty shell. My cup of life evaporated. I let “negative” emotions take over my mind (paranoia, fear, hyperarousal, guilt, sadness). I fed the “fear wolf” by over-feeding these feelings and allowing these emotions to fuel my mind. Then I tried to starve this wolf and that led to avoiding confronting these feelings. I learned to confront them, recognize them, and change my focus to feeding the “courage wolf” -the “positive” emotions that empower us and make us stronger. I remembered my integrity, authenticity, and my will to survive.

Day 32/90 of PTG.

2023 was the most traumatic time of my life and affected every aspect of my existence. I couldn’t eat or sleep, my weight crashed under 100 lbs, I lost my hair + period + fingernails, I had so much tension in my jaw that it damaged my teeth. I had constant flashbacks , nightmares, night terrors of what happened. I was afraid to fall asleep because they wouldn’t stop. I couldn’t function normal during the day. I was too scared to drive anywhere. All I did was cry and blame myself for not being able to recover. I lost complete control of my mind. The physical symptoms are what made me get help. I had zero motivation, but I found that I had discipline. It took an incredible doctor, 2 amazing social workers, and a wonderful psychologist to get to real change. Doing CPT with my psychologist was so healing, and the start of saving my life. It was hard to only see him for a couple hours a week so I decided to attend an in-patient PTSD program. I didnt want to be put in a place with white walls and meds. So then I found PATHH:

4/27-5/3 2024, I attended a post-traumatic growth program called PATHH at Travis Mills Foundation. This program SAVED my life. The first 7 days are intensive and spent in the facility. Then the program continues for 90 days. I am currently on Day 32. In just 32 days I cant even emphasize the growth Ive had. I am no longer letting the trauma control me or have power over me. I am no longer going to live in paranoia and fear. I refuse to have the word “victim” attached to my name. I dont need to rely on a zombie cocktail of medications. I dont need to avoid or perceive certain emotions as negative- I invite them along as temporary passengers on my struggle bus. I learned so much about myself and I no longer feel alone and isolated. The instructors SAVED my life. The 6 other women in the program SAVED my life. I am SO grateful for everything I learned there.
