finding joy in everyday moments 📚☕

Our family is going through loss right now, and it is such a difficult thing to process and navigate through.

In my hardest times I turn to the old hymns of faith and they always comfort, calm, and restore my spirit. They minister to my soul in such a deep way. I can't imagine not having Jesus! ❤️

We call this our book basket and I try to keep it full of books on the topics we're learning about. I'm trying to get everyone super hyped up for America's 250th birthday (and our upcoming study on American history)!!!!

I'm trying to wrap my mind around the fact that I'll have 7 school age kids next year and 2 little ones keeping me busy/distracted 🤪🥹

So many moms have told me about the awesome online programs they use, and I've seen so many ads for online learning. I've seen videos of kids at parks and campsites on laptops doing school...and it looks great.

But, I have this feeling telling me to stay away from all the fantastic trends and popularity and to use actual books. I really want to keep my kids away from screens for the majority of our school.

Study after study keeps showing that screen time reduces our kids attention spans- even time spent on educational apps and programs. Comprehension is shown to be 6-8 times better with physical books than with e-books leading many countries to make the move back toward physical books. Writing with paper and pencil uses different parts of your brain than typing on a computer and it's associated with better comprehension and analytical thinking. One study shows that the trend toward online learning has produced significantly lower language, reading comprehension, and decision making skills.

We will be using some online resources and classes, but I can't bring myself to use it for the majority of their curriculum and have them sit at a computer for hours everyday.

How about you? What are you planning for next year? ❤️

I've been reading this book with my 9 kids ages 1-16. Read aloud time can get noisy and many days we have to quit because the little ones are done even though we aren't, but it's worth it.

This book was scheduled in our study we've been using. Our last read aloud was The Wingfeather Saga, and my kids loved all the adventure and excitement. I was worried they wouldn't like this one as much, but they've really paid attention well and it's led to some great discussions afterwards. I think we've learned so much about how truly powerful God is from the missionary stories we've read.

Even if you are going through a season where read alouds are difficult for your family, keep trying and keep going! Use lots of blocks, coloring pages, and puzzles to keep little fingers busy 🥰

This verse is so important to me!

As a homeschool mom of 9, I have to remember to have my attitude right, to give my all, and have a great that is pleasing to God. Because my attitude really does set the tone for the whole household.

I have tons of things that I want to get done this summer, but so far we've been taking a break and loving having some down time. I think it's so important for all of us!!! 😎

Last year my kids were in 11th, 9th, 6th, 5th, 3rd, and 1st plus I had three more little ones ages 5,3, & 1 😅 With such a busy house I need a super easy open and go program for my little ones!

So many moms tell me they don't use a program for their little ones and I feel like they're treating me like I'm doing something wrong. I'm not focused on academics when they're little, but I do want to be intentional about the time I spend with them. For me it's all about lots of stories, nursery rhymes and songs, and character and emotional development. We have so many great memories from our time together!

We loved using all of these last year! There was almost no prep, and I didn't need to do each one every single day. I hate feeling overwhelmed and behind because I didn't check every single box so these worked great for me! There weren't a lot of time consuming lessons every day, but they had lots of optional extras!

I have a printer with double sided scanning and printing that I use a ton! Because of that I didn't have to buy anything new for last year. I just make the copies and bind them up into their own little booklets. If you do have multiple kids, it's awesome being able to reuse curriculum year after year!

I found something I wanted to use for kindergarten math next year, but now I can't remember what it was, lol! She's already been through Masterbooks K & 1st grade math with her brother, but I want to slow down a little and do something different. Does anyone have any suggestions? 🩷

This was so much fun! We found the idea from A Play Filled Life and my kids loved it!

I love activities that don't break the budget and keep everyone busy and having fun!

Happy Summer!
