ONLY 3 PLAYERS? NO PROBLEM! HERE’S HOW TO PLAY AMERICAN MAHJONG! 🀄️

Wondering how to play three-player Mahjong? It’s one of the questions I’m asked most often—and yes, you can absolutely play with only three players!

Follow standard National Mah Jongg League rules with these important adjustments:

🀄️ Do not deal tiles for the empty seat.
🀄️ East takes the final two tiles individually instead of taking the first and third tiles from the top of the wall.
🀄️ Skip the Charleston completely.
🀄️ Begin the game with East’s first discard.
🀄️ Continue drawing and discarding normally, simply skipping the empty seat.

Three-player Mahjong can feel more challenging at first because you don’t have the Charleston to help shape your hand—but don’t give up on your hand too quickly!

Each player will receive approximately 12–13 additional picks from the wall. By the end of the game, you’ll have seen roughly the same number of tiles you would during a four-player game after completing the first Charleston and courtesy pass. Give your hand time to develop!

I’m headed to the 30A Mahjong Studio for our Mahjong Collective retreat, and these are a few of my FAVORITE things making the trip with me—from easy dresses and statement jewelry to my Mahjong travel essentials and beauty favorites.

What should you pass in the Charleston in American Mahjong? 🀄️

Start with your power tiles—Flowers, Dragons, Multiples and Jokers. Those can help point you toward the strongest opportunities in your rack.

No power tiles yet? Look for your longest and strongest run, or choose a starting direction by leaning toward odds or evens. Then ask yourself: Which tiles are least helpful to what I already have working?

Before you pass, take one more look at those three tiles. Do they work too beautifully together? You don’t want to hand another player the beginning of a great hand!

And remember: reevaluate after every pass. The Charleston is constantly giving you new information, new patterns and potentially an entirely new direction.

A strong Charleston can set up your entire game. 🀄️

Three little decisions that can completely change your Mahjong game. 👀🀄️

If you want to start playing more strategically, pay attention to these:

✨ Don’t give away valuable Power Tiles before you know your direction.
✨ Remember: Jokers can NEVER be used for singles, pairs, or singles groupings.
✨ And don’t expose just because you can — give your hand time to develop before you commit. My favorite rule of thumb? Wait until you have 8–9 tiles working toward your hand before exposing whenever possible.

The better you get at Mahjong, the less it’s about simply finding a hand — and the more it’s about making smart decisions all game long.
