We are so grateful to be among one of three recipients of this year's Sphinx Organization’s Sphinx Venture Fund!
Through BI's project, the "Music Inclusion Hub" we join forces with Castle of our Skins and D-Composed to create a holistic suite of offerings that truly embeds (and normalizes) racial and gender inclusion at all grade levels. The "Music Inclusion Hub" will include multi-media content centering Black creatives; an interactive database of over 1,500 historic women composers’ works; music scores for youth inspired by Negro Spirituals, Haitian and Dominican folk songs, and historic Black figures; and curriculum companion guides that infuse music with history, social studies, science, politics and literature. Scaffolded for youth in grades K-12 and early college, The “Music Inclusion Hub” seeks to educate and empower a new generation of youth who in turn, will be future advocates, provocateurs, and leaders.
We believe this initiative has an impact that will last generations, touching youth of all ages, especially those in formative years of social awareness.
Congratulations to the other recipients:
✨ The New Canon Project, a collaboration between the American String Teachers Association, the American Choral Directors Association, and Rising Tide Music Press
✨ EarShot: Advancing Equity through Publishing & Repertoire Development by the American Composers Orchestra
✨ Music Inclusion Hub, a collaboration between Boulanger Initiative, Castle of our Skins, and D-Composed

We are honored to be among one of three recipients of this year's Sphinx Organization's Sphinx Venture Fund! ACO’s project, titled EarShot: Advancing Equity through Publishing & Repertoire Development, will amplify the work of Black/Latinx composers through publishing works featured in EarShot programs, leveraging ACO’s national orchestral network to facilitate repeat performances of those works, commissioning new works for youth/school orchestras, and creating education modules that place composer teaching artists within youth/school orchestras for one semester in connection to those composer’s ACO commissions.
Please join us in congratulating the other 2023 recipients for their projects including:

My happy surprise this week—"Grit" was reviewed in the American String Teachers Association journal!
I'm surprised and thrilled at the journey of this little piece.
This is one of my early works. I wrote it for myself, after finishing college and struggling to find my next steps. I didn't have an idea then how it might ever be performed. Sometimes, things take a while to find their way!
I am so excited to see this piece enthusiastically embraced by so many wonderful directors and their students. I'm looking forward to visiting some ensembles here in Ohio that are performing it this year too.
Find it for string quartet at Sleepy Puppy Press :

Find it for string orchestra at Murphy Music Press, LLC :

And here's a brand new performance from the Oregon Suzuki String Institute this summer!

Many thanks to Dr. Rebekah Hanson for an enthusiastic review.
_______
"I highly recommend this string quartet! It is energetic, challenging, and lyrical. My students loved working on it, and I am certain yours will as well. The groove is catchy and will be sure to capture the interest of your students and audience.
The piece is best for an intermediate to advanced student string quartet or small chamber orchestra. It is full of vigor and has a spirit of improvisation and dance. This quartet is challenging, as it includes mixed meter, uneven rhythms, accents, and sharp dissonances. Each part has soloistic passages and will be an excellent challenge for all members of the ensemble. While there are many passages with rhythmic unity, students must have a confident sense of rhythm and independence, as each part has complex solo sections. The Violin 1 part goes into third position frequently, but the other parts do not need to shift often. The greatest challenge of this work is the accuracy of the rhythms.
When programming music, one of my primary goals is to get my students playing music by BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, People of Color) and women composers, as it is important for them to see that the composers we perform are like them. Spavelko's quartet is the perfect example of an accessible contemporary work by a female composer. After introducing "Grit" to my students, I have already begun looking for more works by this composer. I hope you give her music a listen:
