Camille Russell-Lew was just named a National Gold Medalist by the Scholastic Awards (“the nation’s longest-running, most prestigious recognition program for creative teens”) and the Alliance for Young Artists & Writers, for her final piece while in a summer Beginning Drawing studio arts course here at the UAF Art Department.

Her self-portrait “Outlet” is a pen + ink piece done in 2024 while she was a student at West Valley High School. After winning the Gold Key/American Visions Award for the region, her work advanced to the final level and is now on display at Carnegie Hall in New York City, where she will be presented with the official award during a ceremony in June – stay tuned for more images, and congratulations to Camille!

This spring, Fairbanks Arts Association invites Interior Alaskan artists to submit original work for Interdependence — a juried exhibition opening May 1 at the Bear Gallery in Pioneer Park, presented in conjunction with Fairbanks Arts Association's 60th anniversary year.
Interdependence refers to the way people, systems, and elements rely on and support one another. This concept was selected as a reflection on the relationships that sustain the arts in Interior Alaska: artists and audiences, mentors and emerging creators, volunteers and organizers, and the many cultural and creative networks that have supported artistic exchange over the past six decades. Just as ecosystems thrive through mutual support, the arts community grows through collaboration, generosity, and collective effort.

🎨 Open call for original work responding to the concept of “Interdependence” in painting, drawing, ceramics, printmaking, sculpture, mixed media, photography, glass, jewelry, or fiber.

🏆 Awards: Juror's Choice ($200) · Second Place ($150) · Third Place ($100) · Honorable Mentions

👩‍🎨 This year's juror is Susan Joy Share, an Anchorage-based visual artist and bookbinder known for large-scale kinetic book sculptures and wearable works used in performance. Her work is held in collections including the National Museum of Women in the Arts, the Anchorage Museum, and the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. She is a recipient of a Rasmuson Foundation Artist Fellowship. Learn more at susanjoyshare.com.

That time of the semester when the main hallway display cases are commandeered to showcase comics from a couple classes 📚✨: Almost a hundred pages/pieces went up this week, along with some great work from the rest of the department in painting, printmaking, and Beginning/Intermediate/Advanced drawing studio art courses 🎨🖊
