I have been in communication with JT from Finca Sagrada for a little while now. He has such an amazing way of putting things. This is an article he wrote awhile back that is one of the clearest explanations of how to do a community effectively that I have come across. This gets to the core of how we heal. Structures are important to start a community, internal growth and relationships are what make it blossom…

I had a call today with a couple in Italy who were exploring what we’re doing at Finca Sagrada. They are interested in building or joining a community in Italy where they could raise their children in alignment with deeper values, surrounded by other families with children who are committed to conscious living. As we talked, a familiar pattern emerged, the same one my wife and I discovered when we were searching:
The children were missing.

In community after community across Italy, they found either no children at all, or children treated as an inconvenience, as something to be managed rather than celebrated. Projects claiming to build a better world somehow excluded the very beings who would inherit that world.
This conversation has me thinking again about what the intention of most intentional communities actually is. 90% of intentional communities fail within the first five years, a failure rate even higher than tech startups, so what gives?
Research points to familiar external culprits: capital constraints, burnout, conflicts over property and resources, poor mediation systems, factionalism, founder problems, and failure to attract subsequent generations. All valid reasons. All symptoms of something deeper.
What if these communities aren’t actually failing, but succeeding exactly at what they were designed for? And what if the absence of children is revealing a truth we’re not ready to face?
Building the Perfect System While Missing the Point
The intentional community space focuses heavily on external structures: governance models, conflict resolution frameworks, revenue streams, self-sufficiency systems. These aren’t unimportant and we’re exploring all of them at Finca Sagrada too.
But here’s what we’ve learned: you can have the most elegant consensus process, the most sophisticated permaculture design, and the most equitable economic model, and still watch your community crumble. Because all those external systems can’t compensate for people who haven’t done their internal work.
It’s like trying to run the newest operating system on hardware that can’t support it. The system might boot up, but it will inevitably crash.
Most intentional communities are attempting to create external utopias while their members remain internally unchanged. The paradox is brutal: you’re trying to build freedom with people who are still imprisoned by their unexamined patterns. You’re attempting to manifest abundance with people operating from scarcity consciousness. You’re designing cooperation among individuals who haven’t healed their competitive wounds. This doesn’t make what they’re doing wrong, but it does make doing the whole community thing much more difficult.

At Finca Sagrada, we’ve chosen a different emphasis. Our primary focus isn’t governance or economics, it’s personal development and interpersonal relations. Not because the external structures don’t matter, but because we’ve recognized they can only be as evolved as the consciousness creating them.
We operate from an understanding that we are all expressions of the same divine consciousness. What benefits one genuinely benefits all; what hinders one hinders all. This isn’t idealistic philosophy, it’s practical reality that changes everything about how we approach community challenges.
Communities Built on What They’re Running From
When you search intentional community listings, there’s always a dropdown menu asking what you believe in, what you stand for. Most communities define themselves by their intentions, their manifestos, their positions.
Notice how many are organized around what they’re against: anti-capitalism, anti-government, anti-mainstream culture. They’re united by what they’re running from rather than what they’re running toward.
Many communities operate from a victim narrative: “The system did this to us. We must protect ourselves from what’s coming. The collapse is inevitable.” They’re preparing for the “big one”- the next crisis, the economic crash, the environmental catastrophe that’s always just around the corner. There is always a distraction or threat to keep us from looking inward.

There’s a fundamental problem with building community on resistance: you’re perpetuating the very reality you claim to oppose. What you resist persists. What you fear, you attract. These aren’t just spiritual platitudes, they’re observable and verifiable patterns in how consciousness creates reality and it’s the reason our society has been on this “doom loop” for as long as anyone can remember.
We cannot raise children in victim consciousness and expect them to create a thriving world. If they watch us every day reinforcing the narrative that external forces control our decisions and destiny, that’s the operating system they’ll inherit. No amount of sustainable agriculture or solar panels will change that programming.
The energy matters more than the structure. Fear-based community building (”protect ourselves from what’s coming”) creates something fundamentally different from creation-based community building (”let’s create what we want to see”). Children feel this difference instantly, even when adults can’t articulate it.

What Children Reveal About Community Consciousness
Children are remarkably sensitive truth-detectors. They sense the difference between fear and love, between authentic presence and performed spirituality, between adults who have done their work and those who are still running from it.
You cannot fake consciousness around children. You cannot pretend you’ve healed wounds that still bleed. You cannot perform community while operating from separation.
This is why the absence of children in intentional communities is so revealing. It’s not primarily about economics or logistics, though those are real barriers we’ll address in the future. It’s about children instinctively avoiding spaces where adults haven’t done their inner work and adults reflexively avoiding the places where they will have to.
Children thrive in environments where:

· Adults take responsibility for their emotional responses
· Conflicts become opportunities for growth rather than threats to survival
· Individual sovereignty is genuinely honored
· The divine nature of every being is recognized, not just spoken about

They struggle in environments where:

· Adults project unhealed trauma onto each other
· Victim narratives dominate collective identity
· Rigid ideologies override human flexibility
· Community exists to validate beliefs rather than support transformation

My own children have been my greatest teachers in this. Their presence forces me to confront patterns I’ve spent a lifetime avoiding. When my two-year-old triggers me, I can’t blame the toddler, I have to ask what unhealed wound in my pain-body is being activated.

Living in community with multiple families amplifies this mirror exponentially. If I react differently to someone else’s child than my own, that reveals where my ego still clings to “mine” versus “theirs.” If another parent’s approach triggers judgment, that shows me where I’m still operating from fear rather than trust.
The children don’t care about our elegant philosophies. They respond to what’s actually present in the room and the consciousness we embody, not the values we espouse.
The Inseparable Relationship
Here’s what we’re discovering at Finca Sagrada: you cannot separate adult transformation from children’s wellbeing. They’re not two different projects happening in parallel, they’re the same project.
In a highly evolved community, all children would be loved equally and all adults would be equally responsible for their welfare. This isn’t about forced collectivism or eliminating healthy boundaries, it’s about recognizing that every child is showing us something about ourselves, and every adult’s healing benefits every child.
This is why personal and interpersonal development are our primary focus. When someone is struggling with an internal issue, the community rallies. Not out of obligation, but from recognition that helping them is helping all of us. The children watch us model emotional responsibility and creative response rather than reactive victimhood.
But this only works when adults are actually willing to do the work.
Many intentional communities want the external results of conscious living without the internal labor required to get there. They prefer to busy themselves with external labor and want cooperative economics without healing competitive wounds. They want consensus governance without releasing the need to control outcomes. They want community without surrendering the illusion of separation.
That’s like wanting to be physically fit without ever exercising. The intention is nice, but the results won’t appear externally without the commitment internally.
The Revolution Is Internal
We’ve been asking the wrong question. The question isn’t “How do we structure this?” The question is “Who must we become?”
You cannot create a new paradigm from an old operating system. You cannot build conscious community with unconscious humans. You cannot manifest external freedom while remaining internally imprisoned.
The world doesn’t need to be fixed, it needs to be seen clearly. What we perceive as “problems out there” are reflections of unhealed consciousness. The systems we rail against are manifestations of separation consciousness made visible. Fighting them without healing the consciousness that created them is like treating symptoms while ignoring the disease.
This is why rigid structures inevitably fail. They’re attempting to impose external order on internal chaos. They’re trying to govern unconscious beings who haven’t yet developed self-governance. They’re creating rules for people who haven’t solidified principles.
Highly evolved communities don’t need elaborate rule books because the members have internalized principles and can communicate differences without needing to be right. They don’t need complex conflict resolution systems because people take responsibility for their own emotional response and operate from resonance. They don’t need enforcement mechanisms because everyone operates from genuine care for the whole.
But you can’t skip to that end state. You have to do the work to get there.

What Actually Works
So what makes the difference between communities that fail and communities that thrive?
Not better systems. Not more funding. Not more ideological purity.
Commitment to internal work alongside external building.
The communities that succeed, the ones that have lasted decades, the ones that attract and retain multiple generations, the ones where children genuinely flourish, all share common characteristics:
They prioritize consciousness over structure. Systems exist to serve evolving humans, not control unconscious ones.
They embrace conflict as teacher. Discord reveals what needs healing; they don’t avoid it or suppress it.
They hold both individual sovereignty and collective good. Not one or the other, but both simultaneously.
They recognize the inseparability of personal transformation and community health. Inner work isn’t separate from community work; it IS community work.
They create space for human complexity. Rigid ideologies give way to flexible principles that honor diverse expressions of the same truth.
They understand that children are the litmus test. If children don’t thrive, something fundamental isn’t working, regardless of how good it looks on paper.
At Finca Sagrada, we don’t claim to have it figured out. We’re in the messy middle of this experiment, facing all the challenges that come with intentional community while trying to do it differently.
What’s different is our emphasis. We’re not trying to perfect the external systems before people are ready to live them. We’re supporting each other in becoming the kinds of humans who can create and sustain evolved systems organically.
We’re discovering that when adults commit to their own healing, children naturally thrive. When people take responsibility for their internal states, external conflicts resolve more easily. When consciousness expands, systems naturally evolve to match it.

The Honest Question
Are you building a refuge or a renaissance?
Refuges attract people running from something. They’re organized around fear, protection, and resistance. They succeed at creating temporary safety but fail at generating lasting transformation.
Renaissances attract people creating something. They’re organized around possibility, expression, and becoming. They succeed at birthing new ways of being that ripple outward beyond themselves.
Children know the difference instantly. They’re drawn to spaces of creation and growth. They instinctively avoid spaces of fear and contraction, no matter how beautiful the permaculture garden.
If your intentional community doesn’t have children, or if the children there seem merely tolerated, that’s not a logistical problem. That’s consciousness feedback. The space isn’t yet ready for life to fully flourish.
But here’s the good news: consciousness can change. People can heal. Communities can evolve.
The work isn’t easy. It requires facing everything we’ve spent our lives avoiding. It demands we take responsibility for our experience rather than blame external circumstances. It asks us to recognize our divinity while owning our humanness.
But it’s the only work that actually creates lasting change.
We can’t build a new world on an old foundation. We can’t create generative communities from victim consciousness. We can’t raise free children in spaces where adults remain imprisoned by unexamined patterns.
The revolution truly is internal. And it starts with each of us willing to ask not “What’s wrong with them?” but “What needs healing in me?”
That’s the work that makes thriving, multi-dimensional, child-centered community possible.

I find it wonderful to have such an amazing core group of followers to start this movement. I deeply appreciate each and every one of you. This journey will not succeed with me alone and I welcome your input to make this mission statement as clear and easy to understand as possible. Also to share your wisdom as pieces of this idea resonate with you.

I've searched far and wide for ways to heal myself for over 20 years. Physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually. In doing so, I remembered a deep piece is in community. Not digitally, Not with a phone call, and not just from in frequent visits. It was not but a few generations ago that we all lived in community. I appreciate the trappings of modern life, my hope is to remember the importance of our core needs as human beings. Through community and a shared purpose, to bring out the very best strengths of our humanity. Its all ready here today within all of us. All we need to do is remember...
