This picture says it all.

A huge thank you to Mrs. Rachel Heck, our incredible HSI coordinator, who works year-round—often behind the scenes—to make this program what it is. Every speaker, every site visit, every perfectly timed schedule… it all happens because of her.

She gives her time, energy, and heart to ensure that each student walks away with an experience they’ll never forget. As a full-time teacher at Reitz High School, she somehow manages to balance it all—coordinating HSI down to the minute with care, passion, and unwavering commitment.

So much of what she does happens behind the scenes, but her impact is felt in every detail—and we’re endlessly grateful.

Thank you, Mrs. Heck. This program wouldn’t exist without you.

Today, the Deaconess/EVSC (Evansville Vanderburgh School Corporation) Health Science Institute 32 came to a close with our student recognition brunch—and what an unforgettable two weeks it’s been. From trauma drills and simulation centers to intubating mannequins and practicing using surgical robots, HSI 32 has truly raised the bar.

To our incredible students: you stepped into this program with curiosity and walked out with confidence, purpose, and a clearer vision of what your future could look like. Whether it was practicing ultrasound, suiting up in the OR, or hearing a story that changed your perspective—your growth was real, and it showed.

We are so proud of how far you’ve come and cannot wait to see where life takes each of you. The road ahead is bright—and no matter where it leads, you’ve already proven you’re ready for the challenge.

A heartfelt thank you to the countless professionals, departments, schools, and first responders who helped make this experience possible. It truly takes a village to pull off a program like this, and we are so grateful for every moment you gave to our students.

To those hoping to be part of this experience next year, HSI 33 will take place June 2026. More details on applications will be shared in the coming months.

Congratulations, HSI 32—you made these two weeks something special. Your journey is just beginning.

Today we had an incredible experience at University of Southern Indiana College of Nursing and Health Professions, where students rotated through a variety of hands-on stations and discovered just how many impactful careers exist in healthcare!

💨 Respiratory Therapy (RT)
Students got a firsthand look at airway management by practicing intubation on mannequins. They learned how respiratory therapists play a critical role in emergency situations, ICU care, and long-term breathing support.

🔬 Diagnostic Medical Sonography (DMS)
Students stepped into the world of medical imaging by using ultrasound on mannequins. They saw how sonographers produce real-time images to help diagnose a wide range of conditions—from heart problems to abdominal pain to pregnancies.

👐 Occupational Therapy
OT challenged students to rethink everyday tasks—like using a sock assist to simulate dressing with limited mobility. They also tested grip strength and learned how OT helps people regain independence after illness or injury.

💉 Nursing
Students toured the simulation lab, explored the nursing program, and even tried out virtual reality scenarios that mimic real patient care. It was an exciting look at how future nurses are trained for high-stakes, real-world situations.

🥗 Food and Nutrition
In this station, students counted carbs in meals and learned how dietitians develop nutrition plans tailored to specific medical conditions. It was a great reminder that food is a vital part of healing and health.

A huge thank you to the team at University of Southern Indiana's College of Nursing and Health Professions for creating such a fun, engaging, and educational experience for our students!

Today we visited the University of Southern Indiana's Pott College of Science, Engineering, and Education and had an incredible day of interactive learning across several departments!

Dr. Cindy DeLoney-Marino, Professor and Chair of Biology, kicked things off with an engaging biology lecture followed by an eye-opening epidemiology activity. Students simulated the spread of disease by mixing “test tubes,” showing how quickly infections can move through a population.

Dr. Ken Walsh, Chair of Chemistry and Biochemistry, led students through three hands-on labs—extracting DNA from strawberries, making their own silly putty, and even forming nylon right in front of their eyes. It was an exciting and memorable dive into applied chemistry!

Over lunch, Dr. Kim Delaney, Associate Professor of Biology, shared insights into the Biology–Medical Professions (BMD) program, giving students a clearer understanding of the many pathways they can take in health sciences.

Huge thanks to the faculty and staff at USI for an inspiring and hands-on day of science and exploration!
