Guys Read Gals Read Inc. An organization devoted to literacy outreach for elementary school students, Guys Read Gals Read, Inc. Guys Read Gals Read, Inc.

presents fun reading material to elementary school students through a network of volunteer readers and role models. was borne from the original Guys Read program, founded by Greg Hill in 2006. The intent of the Guys Read program is to provide interesting reading material and positive role models to 4th grade boys, which is the age group of boys that is most likely to lose interest in reading for f

un. A few years later, a companion program titled Gals Read was founded, and focused on expanding the reading material available to 4th grade girls and introducing new books. Since then, the programs have evolved into Guys Read Gals Read, Inc. (a.k.a., GR2), a non-profit organization dedicated to running the Guys and Gals Read programs from the base funding through book selection and volunteer recruitment. For the Guys Read program, each semester rotating teams of men go to elementary schools in the Fairbanks North Star Borough School District during the school's lunchtime twice a week for two months. At each visit they read aloud the beginning of one of four well-illustrated, boy-friendly books. Multiple copies of each book are donated to each school library. The readers use document cameras to project the pages onto a wall, and laser pointers to show their place on the page, so even low-level readers can participate. A party is held at the main public library at the end of the month. Featuring Guys Games (spitwad target shooting, ping-pong ball maze, etc.) and Guys Grub (cheese pizza and water), it's proven a great way of attracting families to the public library. The Gals Read program is run slightly differently, as their development and reading enjoyment often varies. For the Gals Read program, volunteer women visit the elementary schools multiple times and read chapters of a smaller selection of books, which are also donated to the school libraries. GR2 is funded through private donations and operated entirely by volunteers, including the diverse group of men that participate in readings in addition to the governing board of 9 members. The president and the board work with school district officials and school librarians to select books and run a successful program. GR2 also provides limited funding and support to satellite Guys Read programs in other regions of Alaska, and has inspired sister programs in other states as well. For more information, check out the Guys Read Gals Read United website (GuysGalsRead.org) or the library's webpage (http://fnsblibrary.org), for the free online program manual.

Guys Read Gals Read is seeking interested individuals in serving on our board of directors! A vacancy or two exists and if you share our vision of fostering a love of reading among the youth of our community, we would love to hear from you! An especial focus would be for those with great organizational skills or bookkeeping experience. Past experience on a nonprofit board is fantastic but not required. Hello local, literacy-loving friends!

Guys Read Gals Read will begin its Winter 2025 cycle the first week of February. 120 reading sessions will take place over 10 weeks across 15 different elementary schools during the 4th graders' half-hour lunch period.

These are short, 30-minute sessions where we share graphic novels that will help instill, strengthen, or reignite a love for reading in the youth of our community.

Want to get involved but unsure about scheduling commitments? We got you! Some folks can only work in a single half-hour volunteer opportunity once each semester and that is perfectly fine. Our scheduling set up allows volunteers to see all available needs and select exact slots that work for them. You can also convey just general availability and time commitment preferences and we'll assign you as needed, sending a detailed schedule for you confirm. Message us here or email the Program Coordinator at [email protected]

Reading for fun is vital for our world. Children who find the right balance (with our help!) between time on a device and time in a book will see for themselves just how valuable it is to hold onto a love for reading as they get older.

See the comments for a link to our master schedule as well as a sneak peak of the books selected for this cycle.

Join us this semester as, once again, Guys Read and Gals Read!

(Fortunately for our volunteers, the audience at our schools is a lot less stuffy than the one in this photo)

Guys Read Gals Read is in full swing for the Fall 2024 season! With two weeks under wraps and many more to go, we still have great need for volunteers to join us with reading to local 4th grade boys and girls in schools across the district.

Volunteering is easy and flexible to your schedule, with 120 total reading sessions between October, November, and December. There are many locations, dates, and times (typically between 11am and 1pm) to choose from and sessions only last 30 minutes.

Our book selection each semester includes a variety of graphic novels, ranging from silly to inspiring to reflective. Students get together during their lunch break to listen and follow along as one volunteer reads aloud while another holds the book under a camera to project the illustrations for all to see.

We never get through a whole book in a single session, or even half a book, and that is intentional! Our goal is to leave students eager to see what happens next, so they have to read the rest for themselves. Several copies of each title are donated to the school libraries so our young audience members can check them out and find out what happened to Princess Amaya’s parents in Gemworld, or if Olivia Tong will get help and support as she deals with her anxiety-fueled imaginary friend Viola, or if the trio of racoons (one is definitely an opossum though…) can finally steal the whole dumpster behind the new health food store, or if the orphan Ollie can figure out what is plaguing the Moon Creatures on Shadow Island and get them help before its too late, and on and on and on! See the comments section for the 8 total books being used this cycle. We're already getting ready to order out batch for the second semester too!

Ready to get involved? Feel free to reach out here on Facebook, submit a volunteer interest form at https://forms.gle/Se65tzzPc6w3ix1V7 or email the Program Coordinator at [email protected]. Learn more about Guys Read Gals Read at https://guysgalsread.org/volunteer/
