Meet Sophia Grausam, an incredibly talented Gloucester-based illustrator! Sophia illustrated two spreads for Issue 1 and was extremely helpful finalizing the last few major features.

Her fun comic strip is already a favorite in our house, and her dunes illustration in collaboration with the Trustees earned high praise from our local experts! She also generously donated a fun extra for kids to receive in the mail alongside their first issue!

A little more about Sophia: Sophia is a Massachusetts-based illustrator whose work celebrates whimsical storytelling and food illustration. She earned her BFA in Illustration from the Massachusetts College of Art and Design in Boston, Massachusetts.

Sophia’s illustrations feature quirky characters, expressive animals, intricate insects, and playful typography, all inspired by the world around her. Childhood nostalgia and growing up on Cape Ann continue to shape her work, inspiring her to capture the wonder and magic found in everyday moments.

Her food illustrations are heavily influenced by vintage cookbooks and retro recipes from the 1950s. Learning to cook and bake with her grandmother, Margaret, and her mother, Gemma, was a cherished part of her childhood and remains one of her greatest creative inspirations. Through food illustration, Sophia celebrates family traditions, shared meals, and the stories that recipes carry from one generation to the next.

Sophia’s work has been recognized by Creative Quarterly, 3x3 Magazine, the Scholastic Art Awards, and the Handel & Haydn Society. Her illustrations have also been exhibited at Zone 3 with Harvard University, Isenberg Projects in Allston, Massachusetts as part of the Art in Print Volume 14 series, and in multiple exhibitions at the Massachusetts College of Art and Design, including the 2023, 2024, 2025, and 2026 MassArt Auctions. Most recently, her work has been exhibited at Source Bakery in Gloucester, Massachusetts, and Gulu-Gulu Café in Salem, Massachusetts.

Meet Vicki Graf, a terrific meteorologist, climate reporter, and North Shore artist! Vicki is a Marblehead native and contributed to two incredible spreads in Issue 1!

She was so helpful finding a STEM activity that kids would connect with and created one of our most engaging features! She wrote and illustrated an interactive spread on spotting North Shore weather patterns, created a “Create your own barometer” experiment, and started her “Graf’s Cast” Q&A. Every issue, Vicki will answer kids’ questions on North Shore forecasts, climate science, and meteorology!

A little more about Vicki: Vicki is a meteorologist at Boston 25 News. Growing up on the North Shore sparked her fascination with weather and science. She studied meteorology at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Florida, where she got a lot of experience with severe weather and hurricanes!

After forecasting across the southeast for several years, Vicki was thrilled to return home to Boston. She now lives in Marblehead with her husband and loves exploring everything the North Shore has to offer.

Look for her “Graf’s Cast” in Issue 1, where she explains more on how her North Shore upbringing got her interested in the weather. Send your questions to [email protected]. She can’t wait to hear from you!

Meet Peter Schalck, a Marblehead native and extremely talented illustrator and graphic designer! Peter has been extremely helpful since the very beginning of Tidelines, illustrating two spreads for our first issue and helping with technical advice on formatting and design. He went above and beyond to ensure we were set up for success! He and his family also operate one of the best stores on the North Shore!

Look out for his "Search the Shore" illustration, where he hid numerous objects inside a classic North Shore scene!

Pete began his art career in 1981 as a layout artist at Foster's Screen Printing. He studied at the Art Institute of Boston for three years before transferring to the Massachusetts College of Art, where he majored in Communication Design.

In 1996, Pete founded Flat Rock Creative, a Marblehead-based graphic design and website development studio that has served businesses and organizations throughout New England for decades. His passion for coastal life and New England history is reflected throughout his work as an artist, designer, and illustrator.

In 2022, Pete and his family opened Marblehead Mercantile, a seaside gift shop featuring apparel, home goods, and unique gifts inspired by the town's rich maritime heritage. The shop (in the same building his great-great-grandfather once owned!) showcases Pete's original artwork, celebrating the character, charm, and history of Marblehead.

Beyond visual art, Pete is also a songwriter and recording artist. He writes, records, and produces his own original music, which is available on Spotify and SoundCloud under the name Pete Schalck & The Invisibles. Whether through design, illustration, painting, or music, Pete's work is driven by a lifelong passion for creativity and storytelling.
