Today is the day! I donated a 6 hour guided trip for the benefit of the association; attend and bid on it for a good cause.

The PA Steelhead Association is having its 5th annual Fall Run Picnic on Saturday, September 26th. Time: 2-6 PM

Location: Pleasant Ridge Park Pavilion, 8271 Barker Rd, Girard, PA 16417

This year we are recognizing the milestone anniversary years for 5 local organizations: PA Steelhead Association, SONS of Lake Erie, 3-CU Trout Association, Northwest Pa Chapter Of Trout Unlimited nwpatrout.org, and Wesleyville Conservation Club .

Come spend some time with your fellow anglers and talk about how you will be preparing for the upcoming steelhead season. There will be games, flycasting demonstrations, and a magnetic fishpond for kids at the Picnic. There are plenty of raffle items which include guided fishing trips, camping chairs, fishing rod and reel combos, trout/steelhead beads, fishing flies, and a lot more.

A catered dinner that is being prepared by Teresa's Deli will be served around 4:30 PM. This is a BYOB event.

A limited number of tickets will be available at the door.

If you’re out in state gamelands — please wear orange!

Have you heard about the changes this year?

New regulations require ALL state game lands users NOT engaged in hunting, trapping, or fishing to wear fluorescent orange from October 1 through January 31.

Users are required to wear a minimum of 250 square inches of fluorescent orange on head, chest, and back combined OR a fluorescent orange hat.

Here are some extra tips for enjoying state game lands this fall:

- If you have a pet with you, we highly recommend a vest, harness, leash, or bandana.

- Backpacks can limit your 360 degrees of visibility. Add a bandana or covering to your backpack to ensure you're seen.

- Even if you’re horseback riding, you’re REQUIRED to meet orange requirements, regardless of safety equipment being worn. It’s suggested to have orange on your horse as well.

Our goal is to ensure ALL users, hunters and non-hunters alike, are as safe as possible on state game lands 365 days a year!

October 14, 2026 at 7 PM the Executive Director of the PA Fish & Boat Commission will be speaking on the Steelhead Fishery to the PA Steelhead Association. I am confident he’s not going to provide a timeline, but all of our focused calls and emails have at least stirred the pot. I hope you consider making some phone calls after reading my article and that you’ll attend the PSA meeting next month! All meetings are at the American Legion next to the Erie Airport and are open to the public.

If we all voice a unified opinion (return to stocking 1 million a year or revisit the Lake Erie Committee Agreement and allow other states to fill our void) then our representatives will help us. With discussion of joining the PGC and PFBC, I am very concerned about the future of our steelhead fishery.
