Do You Have Students Who Sabotage Their Own Success? 07/27/2022

Do You Have Students Who Sabotage Their Own Success? -

Do You Have Students Who Sabotage Their Own Success? You know your students can learn. But they keep getting in their own way. The work is hard, and the self-talk continues to sabotage the effort. Negative emotions keep arising. All of this prompts the question: How important is a students’ mathematical mindset?

Got Students Who Give Up on Word Problems? 07/06/2022

Got Students Who Give Up on Word Problems? -

Got Students Who Give Up on Word Problems? If brain research has taught us anything, it’s that growing in grit is critical to progress in any area. Learning requires struggle; our job is to figure out how to support kids as they learn so they don’t give up. This is easier said than done. It’s hard to work against the very real emotions...

We learned long ago that the secret to doing hard things with students is to unpack the emotions.

That being said, it isn’t an overnight fix. As with all good things, it takes time, intentionality, and patience. And the truth is that all of your hard work may not manifest until the next year when they have a different teacher.

But we don’t do this for ourselves. We have taken this occupation of teaching to grow others. It is truly sacrificial in its nature. So with that said, here is a carousel of ways to unpack and decrease anxiety when your kids are faced with math word problems. But feel free to use these principles with any other contact area.

What skills or content do your kids show the most anxiety with? We’d love to know so we can address it in a future post! Comment below!

One way we teachers get sideways is to want more help for kids than parents or guardians are willing to provide.

We can only control what goes on in the walls of our classroom; that’s a tough reality.

So keep pushing and communicating kids’ needs to parents, but when they refuse to hear you-

Well, here’s an for you…
Do what you can, and then rest knowing you’ve done right.

Every year leaves you as a seed planter or a game changer. More details on that? Check it out in our

Sometimes it’s a pattern. Sometimes it’s an individual event.

But we all have times in the classroom where students don’t do the work we’ve assigned.

Don’t take it personally; it’s not about you. It’s about them.

Here’s some verbiage to use to get to the heart of the matter:

❤️ Are you okay? Do you feel safe here? Are you safe at home?

❤️ How did you sleep last night?

❤️ Dis you have a rough morning? Did you have a rough night?

We’re not excusing or condoning missing work. But if emotions need to be processed before work can happen (and they do…), then the discussion will allow for that, while punishment won’t. ❤️

What does your school do about missing work? Is it effective? What would you like to change? Start the discussion below!

As the end of the year is in sight and emotions begin to rise, let’s remember a few things:

🍎 kids struggle with allowing their emotions to control them (some of adults are still in this boat as well)

🍎The end of the year brings a plethora of various emotions- both positive and negative

🍎Kids aren’t “bad” because they’re out of sorts. They’re just emotional kids.

So let’s treat them like emotional kids. Assure them you’re not angry- this will lower anxiety. Acknowledge their emotions- this will lower anxiety. Remind them of their purpose- this gives them a focus. Then, go!!!

You will need to repeat this several times a day as a reset, but it works!

If this was helpful, share it with a colleague! Happy End of year!

End of the school year stress is upon us. Emotions always rise because a change is coming.

Adults begin stressing over grades and last minute late work. For some parents, the prospect of having their kids back home is tough.

And all of this has the potential to spill over onto us, Teachers. I’m not saying it’s right; it’s just fact.

So with that in mind, here is a carousel of reflective questions so you can control the reaction you’re having. Get down to it, so you can move on from it.

true story

Learn from my mistake.

Build relationships before you deliver bad news.

Teach parents that you know and love their child before you contact them with something that may break their heart.

Parenting is tough. And bad news is hard to hear.

If this post helped you out, consider our Parent Relationship Class. It will help you reframe the way you consider the parent portion of your job. ❤️

For sure you’re tired, Teachers.
We get it.

But try your best to look past the next 10 minutes.

The parents in your classroom will remember you by the last interaction you have with them. And because people share stories, they will share that interaction with their friends.

That’s just how it works.

Why not take just a bit of time and ensure that this last interaction ends the year on a positive note?

Check out this carousel for some verbiage to copy and paste!
