Is your rent allowed to increase THAT much? It depends on where you live. 🏠

Rent control laws limit how much a landlord can charge or raise rent. In the U.S., it’s up to states and cities, not the federal government.

Only two states, Oregon and California, cap rent increases statewide. Cities in New York, New Jersey, California, Maryland, Minnesota, and Maine have their own rules, as well as Washington, D.C.

New York City runs two separate systems, and which one applies often depends on when your building was built.

Inspired by her little sister Hania, Royal Oak, Michigan, business law attorney Karolina Powalka always wanted to be a disability rights advocate, but she got an early reality check.

"When I asked my civil procedure professor what it would take. She goes, ‘Unless you want to live in a box on the side of the road, you may want to reconsider,’" she says.

But local nonprofit FAR Therapeutic Arts and Recreation brought her back, and now Powalka can support her "superstar" sister and community.

"So, full circle, I found a way to be an advocate without having to live in a box on the side of the road.”

Can police stop you and pat you down? Yes, but only under certain conditions.

Officers need “reasonable suspicion,” which means specific facts that suggest you are armed. A hunch is not enough. They can pat down your outer clothing for weapons, but they can’t do a full search.

If a stop was unlawful, evidence from it may not be allowed in court. A criminal defense attorney can file a motion to suppress it.

Stopped by police and not sure if it was legal? Talk to a lawyer. Find a top criminal defense attorney near you through the link in our bio.

Aida Spahic was 8 when war broke out in her native Bosnia-Herzegovina.

What she and her family endured while fighting to survive and escaping to Michigan shaped her into the criminal defense advocate she is today.

“I experienced two different worlds: One was a war where there’s absolutely no system of justice, and then growing up in the Detroit area where the justice system is very real, but it’s not always fair, especially for certain communities,” she says.

“It gave me a deep respect for the law, but also I know that it doesn’t always work the way that it should.”

Lansing’s Liisa Speaker unflinchingly pursues appeals while fighting to hold family law and child welfare judges accountable — and even to overhaul the state’s family court system.

“Sometimes when people come to us, they’ve really been broken down. They didn’t have a good result in the trial court, and they are very despondent," she says. "We let them know we care, and we keep fighting for them. And that gives them hope."

Facing unprecedented challenges during a mass deportation campaign in Oregon, dedicated immigration and civil rights attorneys have worked long hours to defend immigrants and stand up for the rule of law.

“This is why I went to law school, right?” says immigration attorney Stephen Manning. “If you're going to meet the moment — well, this is the moment.”

Read in the 2026 Oregon edition of Super Lawyers magazine how these attorneys are challenging warrantless arrests and fighting for constitutional rights:

🔒 Does your employer know your fingerprint? Your face? Your voice?

Biometric data, like fingerprints, retina scans, and facial recognition, is becoming a normal part of the workplace. Employers use it to unlock laptops, secure sensitive areas, and track time clocks.

And this is happening while most employees have few legal protections for how that data is collected, stored, or used.

Only a handful of states (like Illinois, Texas, and Washington) have laws requiring notice or consent. No federal law protects your biometric privacy at work.

Swipe through to learn what counts as biometric data, which states protect it, and what happens when companies get it wrong.
