Tonight, we honor a group of young men who played with heart, grit, and brotherhood from the first tip‑off to the final buzzer. Our Varsity Irish may have seen their playoff run come to an end, but their season was defined by far more than a scoreboard. It was built on discipline, sacrifice, early mornings, late nights, and a commitment to each other that never wavered.
To our seniors, Juan Pablo Duran, Diego Sanchez, Miguel Hernandez, Alfred Merjil, John Michael Leydon, and Jacob DuRussel—thank you.
Thank you for leading with courage.
Thank you for setting the tone in the locker room, in the classroom, and on the court.
Thank you for carrying the Irish tradition with pride and for showing our younger players what it means to compete with integrity and faith.

You leave behind a legacy of resilience and brotherhood that will echo long after your final game. Your example has shaped the future of this program, and we are grateful for every moment you gave to Cathedral.

To the entire team — coaches, players, families — thank you for a season filled with growth, joy, and unforgettable moments. Loss does not define you; the way you played for each other does.

ASH WEDNESDAY
(A reflection inspired by Meditations 16 of St. John Baptist de La Salle, rephrased in today’s language)

Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of Lent, a season that calls us to slow down, reflect, and return to God with sincerity. When we receive ashes, the Church is inviting us into a spirit of penance that is not temporary, but lived throughout the forty days of Lent.

In his Meditations, St. John Baptist de La Salle reminds us that penance is not about appearances or harsh sacrifices. It begins with an honest heart, one that desires conversion and is willing to be shaped by God’s grace day by day.

Fasting, in this spirit, goes beyond food. It means learning to fast with our eyes by turning away from distractions, with our words by choosing silence and kindness, and with our hearts by letting go of thoughts and desires that pull us away from God. When lived this way, fasting becomes a form of prayer.

As ashes are placed on our foreheads, we are reminded that we are dust and will return to dust. This truth is not meant to instill fear, but wisdom, to help us detach from what does not last and focus on what truly gives life.

St. La Salle teaches that a good and holy life is formed through daily conversion. If we desire to live well and die well, we begin by living simply, humbly, and faithfully, walking through Lent as true penitents, open to transformation.

Brother Andres taught at nine schools across the New Orleans-Santa Fe District, serving in various roles including Teacher, sub-Director, Director, Dean, Principal, and Bookkeeper. While he was known for his serious demeanor, his kindness towards others left a lasting impression on his students, who greatly admired him.

Brother Anthony dedicated 64 years of his life to serving as a Brother across nine schools in the New Orleans-Santa Fe District. He held various teaching and administrative positions throughout his career, spending significant time at Cathedral High School in El Paso, TX, and Rummel High School in Metairie, LA. Sadly, he passed away while retired at Rummel, and his funeral mass was held in the school gym.
