One of the highlights of my historian career has been speaking with men who were once Braceros and working with the City of Socorro, the National Trust for Historic Preservation (especially Sehila Mota Casper who is now the executive director of Latinos in Heritage Conservation) as well as the amazing Front Range Associates to successfully propose Rio Vista as a National Historic Landmark. The plaque was unveiled last weekend! Congratulations to all.

‘Inhumane’ Mexican worker program commemorated in U.S. The Rio Vista Bracero Reception Center in South Texas, where Mexican workers were processed, has been designated as a national historic landmark.

The Humanities Collaborative at EPCC-UTEP is bringing this amazing writer to UTEP on May 2. "Mexican by birth, Canadian by inclination," Silvia Moreno-Garcia is the author of numerous award-winning books. We hope to see you there!!

New project and collaboration!

The Institute of Oral History is excited to announce a new collaboration. Through a generous Mellon grant, we will be working with faculty from the Texas Tech Huckabee College of Architecture, Professors Ersela Krippa and Stephen Mueller, along with their UG and MA research assistants. PhD candidates Kim Sumano Ortega and Andrew Schuster will join IOH director Yolanda Leyva to form the UTEP team. The IOH will gather community stories in the Segundo Barrio and Chamizal this year to document environmental inequity when it comes to the accessibility to shade. This week we attended a meeting of Conscious Barrio where we introduced our project.

The Rio Vista Bracero Museum needs your help as we begin to curate our future exhibits. This is a call for artifacts related to this history. These include things such as photographs and photo albums, legal documentation of the era, tools, etc. If you are interested in sharing any relevant objects with the museum or have any questions, please send us a message.

Join us Monday Night, 7:00 PM at Carlsbad Museum for a presentation by Author and expert Historian of Blackdom, New Mexico, Dr. Timothy E. Nelson,. Dr. Nelson will read excerpts from his new book 'Blackdom, New Mexico: The Significance of the Afro-Frontier, 1900-1930'. The presentation and reading will end with a Q&A session and signed copies of his book will be available.
