The EAHS home on the web has been re-born. The address is the same: http://www.edinborohistory.org and we are hoping you will find something useful. Facebook will remain the primary news source for events; the web page has a link, and of course you need not be a FB member.

If you use Google today, you may notice the doodle is celebrating the life of Gertrude Jekyll. She is best known for her skills as a gardener. She employed her craft in designing approximately 126 cemeteries in collaboration with English architect Sir Edwin Lutyens. These cemeteries served to inter and commemorate the soldiers of WWI. Her work illustrates the importance of a well-thought-out design.Yves LeManer, the author of the linked article below, states:

"The soft, closely-mown, plain grass was chosen because it eliminated differences and encouraged peace."

Gertrude is also credited for planting short perennials in front of the tombstones, most likely, as to not obstruct the epitaphs.

It’s that time of year again! The Edinboro Area Historical Society is getting ready to put up the big white tent on the lawn of the Doucette House Museum, and volunteers are to serve fresh blueberry crisp a la mode.

The grave markers of Harriet Strong, Elizabeth Ash, and Lucinda Phelps are sandstone, most likely from a local source. Sandstone markers are not as common as marble and granite in our area. Another uncommon material for grave markers is zinc, also known as white bronze. Please explore part of the fascinating history of these unique markers.

Our research has lead us to several primary documents and artifacts. However, they all have been in relation to the accident such as, the three grave markers, mortality schedules, two newspaper articles and the poem detailing the tragic event. The book Edith Ghere donated was our first encounter with something touched by one of the victims while alive. It was an overwhelming experience.

Thank you to all who attended the reception for the exhibit "Three Voices From the Grave". The exhibit will run until December. Regular hours are Tuesdays and Saturdays 9-12 at the Edinboro Area Historical Society.
