Fortis Academy At the Fortis Academy we don't only train the physical aspect of the athlete. We train the entire athlete.

That includes the spirit, character, and mental toughness of the athlete.

Slowing things down with one of our Scanning drills. The stationary player along the boards and the player doing the cutbacks are constantly exchanging pucks. The player along the boards is the one who determines when they exchange pucks. This forces the player that is moving to keep their eyes up “scanning” the ice and waiting for the exchange. As the players get more comfortable scanning the pace of the skater moving and rate at which the exchanges happen increases.

Elite level players are constantly scanning with or without the puck determining what their next play is before it happens. It is a subtle detail that makes these players pace of play faster.

Our College/Pro Men and Women have been consistently working this offseason on and off the ice. When the legs need a day of rest, we focus on upper body explosivity and core strength.

Technical skating work at the elite level is all about dialing in very subtle changes to make a big difference in speed, smoothness, and explosive power.
With punch turn technical refinement, we are looking for:

1) smooth shave on the ice rather than a jagged shave,

2) inside knee over toe and a maintenance of this dorsiflexion throughout the turn,

3) upper body properly turning in sequence with the punch turn.

Great start to August!

Sawchuk 2v1!

Two players from the offensive team have to go around the middle cone before attacking. One player from the defensive team has to go around the first cone and they become the defenseman on a 2 v 1 rush. The second player from the defensive team has to go around the third cone and they become the back checker for the 2 v 1.

The added back pressure from the back checker makes the 2 v 1 more realistic, forcing the offensive team to attack quickly.
