Phase II Speech Contest

The Phase II Orientation Committee is seeking current UWEC students to write a speech to welcome the 2013 incoming freshmen class to UWEC. This speech will be one of the first things new students hear at Phase II Orientation. We hope your speech gets them motivated and excited for their Phase II day as well as kick starts their year. Students are encouraged to write about any topic they feel is important to communicate to new students in their first week on campus, but with a particular focus on academics. Some example questions that could be addressed are:

• What does a new student need to know to be academically successful their first year at UWEC?
• What is the most important—and best—part of life here at UWEC? What is the best part of academic life?
• What do you wish someone would have told you during Phase II Orientation about the transition to UWEC?
• What was your biggest challenge at UWEC and how did you overcome it?

The winner will receive a $250.00 scholarship for the fall, as well as the honor of addressing the 2,000 new students during the Opening Welcome of Phase II Orientation (must be available Friday August 30th to read your speech the morning of Phase II). In addition, the top three finalists will have their work highlighted in the Blugold Nuggets.

The Phase II Orientation Committee will select the finalists and the winner will be notified before the end of the spring semester.

The deadline for submissions is Friday, May 3rd. To enter, email your speech to [email protected]. Be sure to include your name, year in school, major and hometown. Please limit to less than 1,000 words.

Wednesday, March 13th from noon-1:00, we’ll treat 8 second-year communication and business majors to a catered lunch in the Heritage Room of the Davies Center. (And by “we’ll treat” we mean “It’s FREE!”) You’ll have the opportunity to eat with a professional in your future field—a manager with Sherwin Williams. This is your chance to ask any questions you might have and not know who to ask—What’s your “typical” day like? What surprised you the most when you started your career? What piece of advice would you give someone entering your field? The list goes on and on.

The lunch will also be attended by a current career advisor at UWEC, so no worries if you run out of questions to start conversations, we’ll help with that too! And, to make it even easier, convince a friend to join you!

Because we have only a limited number of seats available, you must RSVP to attend the dinner. Please just respond to this email or call (715) 836-3487 to RSVP and we’ll get your name on the list. Please RSVP by Friday, March 8th.
