We're the community tent at the St. Michaels Farmers Market tomorrow!

We'll have information and sign up sheets to join our oyster restoration program and we'll have some live oysters on display to show off how they support a healthy Chesapeake Bay. Hope to see you there!

Fresh, local peaches are back!!! 🍑

Our friends at Blades Orchard FaulknerBranch@BladesOrchard return to the St. Michaels Farmers Market this Saturday with Shore-grown peaches, and we couldn’t be more excited.

Sweet, juicy, and perfectly ripe, these summer favorites are delicious eaten fresh, tossed into a salad with tomatoes, basil, and mozzarella, served over ice cream, or baked into your favorite cobbler or pie.

As we kick off National Farmers Market Week, there’s no better time to shop local and support the farmers and makers who grow and create everything within 60 miles of our market. Meet the people behind your food, ask questions, and take home the freshest flavors of the Eastern Shore.

Yesterday, we brought the Fishmobile to the Talbot County Department of Parks and Recreation summer camp program. Students learned about oysters, met our turtles, crabs, and fish, and they learned about watersheds, pollution, and how trees and oysters serve as filters to help reduce the amount of pollution that ends up in the Chesapeake Bay.

This program was paid for by a grant from the Bryan Brothers Foundation so a big thank you to them for supporting programs like this!

Today, our Director attended the National Marine Educators Association Conference in Cambridge, Maryland. In addition to getting to see lots of friends from other organizations, she presented on using the blue crab as a model for hands on education.

A big thank you to everyone who attended and engaged with the conversation and a big thank you to her co-presenter, Dr. Eric Schott from the Institute of Marine and Environmental Technology .

On Monday, our Director had the opportunity to work with researchers from the Institute of Marine and Environmental Technology who are studying crab aquaculture.

A series of small cages are enclosed in floats, with a single juvenile blue crab in each cage. The floats are attached to a pier and left to float in the Bay. The crabs feed on the bio fouling that grows on the cages, rather than needing to be fed.

Each experimental cage was opened and the crabs were weighed and measured, with any empty cages being recorded. One crab (shown) had its molt still in the cage with it. Another crab (also shown) had a tiny skillet fish in its claws, which it was about to eat. The crabs ranged in size from 25 to 50 mm - they were super cute and very feisty!
