East Tawas 150

East Tawas 150 Celebrating its Sesquicentennial in 2014, East Tawas will host an entire week of special activities during the week of August 3-10. Mark your calendars!

Identified as East Town in the early days, the community became East Tawas in 1864, headlined as “The Coming Metropolis of the North” by Editor C.R. Jackson of the Iosco Gazette. Beginning with Perchville USA 2014, East Tawas will be promoting its 150th birthday, with celebrations throughout the year. An entire week of special activities is in the planning stage for August 3-10, 2014. First sighti

ngs of the sesquicentennial celebration will be a birthday float in the Perchville USA parade. Barbara Wasserman, a local artist, with help from area high school students, has begun creating one of four hand painted murals that portray the past and future of East Tawas. The first mural characterizes the boat building and fishing history and will be mounted on the outside wall of Ben Franklin, Westover Street. Proposed events for the week long celebration include: ice cream social; fashion parade, where you pick your own era for dress; old-fashioned children’s games; concerts; city-wide picnics; pig-roast; vintage car show; bike and walking tours; theatre plays; old time baseball; time capsule burial and much more. There is a planning committee that currently meets every other Tuesday at 4:00 p.m. in the East Tawas Community Center. Individuals and groups are needed to help with the planning and ex*****on of activities. The next meeting is scheduled for February 4th. Updated information can be viewed at: www.EastTawas.com event calendar, EastTawas150 on Facebook, the Chamber of Commerce and the Iosco County News Herald.

Way to go East Tawas! It was an awesome first day of celebration and we are posting this partial representation of photos while we wait for those that will hopefully come in tomorrow. Special thanks to the Knights of Columbus who put on a wonderful feast for us all to enjoy; to the Smith family for their representation; to our King and Queen, Clair Nash and Aileen Elliott; to the Sweet Adeline’s Singing Group and the Tawas Bay Singers, who gave us a heartwarming atmosphere that had us all tapping our feet; and last but not least, for the entertaining performance of, “The Logging Legacy.” See you on Monday for the Bike Tour starting at 11:00 am and the Community Band Performance at 7:00 pm.
