A to Z Math Tutoring

The first full week of school went really well! I am so impressed with my students progress. In Algebra 1, we are well into Unit 1 which is all about statistics. Students completed their first checkpoint on box plots, histograms, and dot plots. I paired students up strategically and they helped each other learn from their mistakes. Now everyone is confident to move on.

We even completed regents problems already pertaining to statistics! We learned the tricks on the TI-84 plus calculators. They did so well! We used the Tablecloth Protocol to allow for independent think time as well as collaboration. Students presented their work using the World Cafe protocol.

Geometry classes are moving along too! We already have completed plenty of constructions using the compass and rulers (inscribed hexagons in a circle, perpendicular bisectors, equilateral triangles, parallel lines, and angle bisectors). Students are doing to well and they will be showing off their knowledge this week on their mid unit exam.

Hello year 15! This year is going to be the best year of my career yet in High School. I got to set up my classroom just for me and my students. This is how you set the students up for math success from Day 1. Take a look at the after photos. The last pic is a before photo of the classroom. The first week we got to know each other. My students have been a pleasure so far and they are eager to start learning! We set up our class norms for the year. We also began learning about quality group work with a non curricular thinking task from math Olympiad. We tackled this word problem using the 3 Reads Protocol. Take a look at a group's work! I'm excited for this year's chapter teaching Algebra 1 and Geometry!

This year I will be teaching Algebra 1 and Geometry using the Illustrative Math Curriculum that most middle schools and high schools are using.

Students did a fantastic job exploring systems of Equations involving one quadratic function and one linear function! I am so proud of their hard work as problem solvers! You'll notice some kids remain in the classroom while others prefer to work in the hallway. I let them choose what works best for them as they are owning their learning.

Some groups had a one solution system of equations, other groups had two solutions to their system equations, while the rest of the groups had a system of Equations that had no solution. They presented to each other and then summarized their learning for the day.

Providing feedback to students is vital for students to make progress and reflect on their work. When writing feedback, I take the time to point out the strengths as well as the next steps. This type of feedback is most encouraging for students to receive.

Attached is an example of the type of feedback I provide. This was one page in an Algebra 1 assessment consisting of all past regents questions.

I will grade according to the scaled scoring that NYSED uses to score the regents so students can have an idea on how they would perform.

Happy Pi Day! This is what happened this week in my 8th grade Math class!

2 of my students memorized the most digits of Pi in their learning community! They memorized over 150 digits of Pi! My winning student got to Pi a teacher in the face during lunch (photo included)

In my ELLs class today, we celebrated Pi Day by creating our own Pi Square Dances to learn about Rigid Transformations. We had so much fun!

I built this lesson using elements from:
1. The book, Building Thinking Classrooms (i.e. Random Grouping, Non Vertical Permanent Surfaces, Thinking Tasks)
2. Illustrative Mathematics
3. My own creativity
