Interesting read on an aspect of time processing!

"New research shows these children have trouble putting together what they see with what they hear, and that these deficits may underlie their speech and communication problems.

For most people, the signals arriving in the brain from the ears and the eyes within a time window of 100 to 200 milliseconds, are put together, to form one perception. For example, hearing the sound of a word and seeing the movement of lips together creates the perception of a spoken word. The new study showed that in children with autism, the time window for binding signals together is wider. . It is like they are watching a foreign movie that was badly dubbed."

As back to school prep starts gearing up for our lab fams, here is some tips for communicating with teachers!

Our favorite line from this story: "If you embrace being a part of my child’s team, you’ll never want out! Once my child touches your heart — and she will most definitely touch your heart — you’ll probably become an advocate for her and for other students like her. You’ll feel overwhelming joy when she understands lessons that once seemed too tough and meets milestones that once seemed too far reaching. You might just remember why you became a teacher in the first place and find a renewal of energy and spirit."

#5. "Communicate honestly with me."

"When your child points and tells you to look, I wish you would respond, 'Yes, look at that pretty little girl. It looks like she’s having so much fun playing, just like you."

When kids notice other kids who look or act different, it's not an opportunity to be scared; it's an oppertunity to maybe make a new friend! Working with kids both on and off the autism spectrum has lead to many great friends.

"Here's what I wish you would do."

This blog post from Autism Daddy shows his tips for being a dad to a child with autism. Is there anymore you'd add?

So I have a wife and a 12 year old son with severe, classic, nonverbal autism as well as somewhat severe epilepsy. And I'm in no way a perfect special needs dad & husband. I'm not even good. I'd say I'm pretty good. And I can always strive to be better. And no one, including our wives, are asking us

Interesting research on visual aids! Visual aids, such as picture schedules and other diagrams, can be used for both academic and daily living skills. Useful for helping kids learn and cope with all the transitions and changes that go along with summer, too!

"Participants given illustrative diagrams likely engaged in deeper levels of processing while listening to the lecture," said Mark A. McDaniel, a psychology professor.
