This month, we celebrate the amazing individuals with Down syndrome who bring their unique talents, personalities, strengths, and joy to our schools and communities.

At School City of East Chicago, we are proud to support inclusive opportunities where every student is valued, respected, and given the opportunity to learn, grow, and succeed.

Let’s continue to promote kindness, acceptance, understanding, and inclusion—not just this month, but every day.

Our Pre-ETS/Cardinal Work Center open house was a success. 70 students signed up for our in-house jobs like the Cardinal Bus Barn, the Cardinal Creations and Press, the Cardinal Nail Corner, the Cardinal Smoothie Corner, the Cardinal Cut/shredding, Cardinal Coffee Corner, the Cardinal Supplies Store and our newest the EC 360 photo.

Today we would like to recognize and celebrate the incredible dedication, compassion, and hard work of Mrs. Miriam Ortiz

Mrs. Ortiz has made a lasting impact on the students of the Cardinal Work Center by helping them develop important life, work, and independent living skills. Her commitment goes far beyond teaching —she takes the time to encourage, support, and truly believe in every student she works with.

What makes Mrs. Ortiz so special is that she doesn’t focus on disabilities; she see abilities, strengths, and potential. She empowers students to believe in themselves, build confidence, and reach goals they may have never thought possible. Her patience, kindness, and unwavering support create a positive environment where students feels valued, respected, and capable of success.

Mrs. Ortiz consistently goes above and beyond, not only helping students learn new skills but also being a trusted mentor, advocate, and source of encouragement. Her dedication touches the lives of students, families, and staff alike.
