How can students get the most out of their DukeEngage experience?
A key component of all DukeEngage programs, reflection helps students to derive meaning from their experiences. DukeEngage offers a reflection challenge each year, with submissions ranging from essays to oral stories and even poetry.
Here’s some of our top reflections from 2025! These students also shared their reflections at the DukeEngage Fall Reunion, pictured here.
Deborah Lendore won “Best Overall” in the DukeEngage Reflection Challenge for her writing and poems about her experience working in the Refugee Rights Unit at the University of Cape Town.
Tashiel Reid won the “Culture and Humility” category for her dynamic spoken-word poem “Thirty More Years” that confronts health inequities in Chicago and the importance of access to the arts.
Sienna Giuseppi won the “Courage and Adaptability” category for her fast-paced “Ignite Talk”-style presentation about building a bridge in DukeEngage Eswatini.
Maddie Morrison won the “Gratitude” category for her deeply personal reflection on how she reframed her father’s health crisis through the lens of community engagement.
Leo Goldberg won the “Hope, Vision, and Purpose” category for his reflection on protests and patriotism during his time in DukeEngage D.C.

This summer, ._papa T’27 put her studies in global health and to work in a program to Eswatini, a small country in southern Africa.
Along with , a team from Cornell University , and local construction workers, Papa and her DukeEngage cohort helped design and build a water system for a primary school in the Herefords community of in the Hhohho region.
Along with the incredible work she did, Papa was able to immerse herself in the community and says that the time she spent with community members was the most impactful part of the program.

How did you spend your summer before coming to Duke?
Maybe you were lifeguarding at a local pool. Maybe you were hanging out with high school friends one last time. Maybe you were even reading Duke’s Common Experience Reading (or not).
But if you’re Reeha Rahman, you spent the summer fighting food insecurity in Georgia. As part of DukeEngage Gateway program, she worked with to alleviate the struggles of hungry children and families in Forsyth and Dawson counties.
DukeEngage Gateway students complete 100 hours of community service in their hometowns over the summer. They address an issue that matters to them by working with a local organization.
From hospice care to homeless shelters, these dedicated first-years made valuable contributions to their local communities before their first semester at Duke.
These students came together to share their experiences at a recent reunion dinner. They talked about their projects, the challenges they faced, and what they learned from their hard work with their community organizations.
The reunion dinner featured a special guest: Durham Mayor Leonardo Williams ! Mayor Williams gave a short speech about the important connection between and Durham, and how they can best work together to improve the community as a whole.
Would you like to know what some of these students did over the summer in the Gateway program? Stay tuned for an upcoming Reel featuring several of their presentations!
