We could not do what we do without the help of Duke University Undergraduate and Graduate students. This year we were able to welcome back a group of seniors who worked with us prior to and through the pandemic. We last saw them as Sophomores, and seeing them come back as confident and eager Seniors was truly a joy.
Each one of our Seniors worked with Dr. Gaffrey and our Graduate Students on their Senior Thesis projects using data they they helped collect. Congratulations to Ainsley Buck, Daniel DeValut, Emily Raich, and Hailey Reisert on your accomplishments. You will be missed!
We also welcomed into the lab students who joined during the pandemic and were trained in unusual circumstances and a new group of students all of whom will be continuing with us in the future. Your contributions to the lab have been amazing!

Check out a new article published by Dr. Michael Gaffrey and Carina Fowler, out now in Neurobiology of Stress! The article finds a relationship between how much cortisol preschooler's release in response to a stressor and the structure of their amygdala. We're excited to contribute this important first step in understanding the relationship between stress hormones and developing brain structure!

Today, the NC Department of Health and Human Services (NCDHHS) announced that child protective services and adult protective services workers are designated as first responders. This classification will help these critical workers access Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
Child protective services and adult protective services are essential to protecting children and adults who are suspected or who have been found to be abused, neglected or exploited. Due to the need of firsthand observation in some cases, this designation will help these workers stay safe and protect the vulnerable populations they serve.

Check out these available resources for parents and caregivers!
Our world is a vastly different place than it was just a few short months ago. Between COVID and the uprisings happening across the country, life might feel more challenging and confusing for all of us. Join Exchange Family Center on June 9th for three virtual workshops that will teach parents and caregivers effective techniques for helping kids of all ages navigate our changing world.
All three workshops will be offered via Facebook Live and recordings will be posted on our page for those who aren’t able to attend the live sessions.
Our kids need the support of their communities more than ever to help them process all of the emotions swirling around their developing minds. Attend one or all of the below sessions to learn new tools and strategies!
12pmET: Zulayhka Clemons will teach families how to create a Well Wish Board, a visual aid to help children wish love and care to others - no matter the distance.
3pmET: Mackenzie Hayes will discuss how picture books can help children process their feelings, and why reading them aloud with kids can be an emotionally bonding experience.
7:30pmET: Cynia Black will talk with parents and caregivers about effective discipline strategies for adolescents, including helpful strategies to combat the COVID quarantine and the emotional reactions to the death of George Floyd.
