42-47 seconds. This is what my research showed me most players touch the ball in a full basketball game.
I followed one player around during an entire weekend AAU tourney many years ago. I timed the length of time the ball was in her hands. 42-47 seconds was the average over 5-games in a weekend.
This player was in 6th grade, but going to be a 7th grader after summer AAU.
This player, the parents, and others on the team were spending a lot of money to play AAU for 42-47 seconds of handling the ball per game.
I approached the parents and said one hour in the gym working on her skills, improving her limitations, learning how to shoot properly, how to finish at the rim properly, learning how to be fearless going to her left hand, and how to pass with variation... would benefit her so much more then getting 42-47 seconds of touch a ball while playing AAU.
This might be the conversation you need to have with many players who are sold the story that AAU is the only way. It is an option, and a great one for a small percentage of players who need it. The large majority of players need to get in the gym and train!

Well as I am sure many of you have seen collegiate fall sports and in person education options continue to dwindle. However it doesn't mean that student-athletes should sit around and do nothing. Luck favors the prepared, and it will be obvious which continued to put in the work both in their class and sport and which ones did not. Be ready , stay prepared !

Are you aware of all of the rule changes Student-Athlete?
As we all know, the Covid crisis has made everyone rethink what were once normal things. A , we want to make sure that have access to all of the information possible via our MyBrakt platform to make the best scholastic decision. Given that we service student-athletes from all over the world here is one rule change that will affect many. A new rule just passed saying that if the university that a student attends will be only having online classes then any student visa recipient will have to return to their country to take classes as their visa will be revoked for the upcoming year. This is already a mess for a regular student, but for a student-athlete who is expected to continue to practice and train this ruling adds on an extra layer of complexity. Unfortunately, there is no word yet on if there will be an exemption for student-athletes. Of course if we hear anything we will let you know or you can join our mailing list at mybrakt.com
