Ken Olin on Twitter “This is how a very good and decent human being - a real American leader - behaves. To anyone who isn’t moved by this, I feel truly sorry for your broken soul. I am so proud to support ”

Kids’ brains develop in bursts called critical periods during which synaptic activity kicks into high gear. These developmental phases—like the period between the ages of 2 and 7—allow children to “learn faster than at any other time of life” and are “a prime opportunity to lay the foundation for a holistic education,” writes Rishi Sriram, an associate professor at Baylor University’s School of Education. ⁣
⁣
To capitalize on the window in early childhood, Sriram recommends three strategies: ⁣
⁣
1. Encourage a love of learning: This is a great time to give children opportunities to experiment and explore. Instead of focusing on outcomes or performance, emphasize the joy in learning something new, while reminding kids it's okay to make mistakes along the way. Encourage kids to build a growth mindset or “the belief that talents and abilities are developed through effort instead of being innately fixed,” writes Sriram.⁣
⁣
2. Focus on breadth, not depth: At this age, kids’ brains can develop skills across many areas, like music, sports, and math. Consider this time a “sampling period” to expose children to a wide variety of activities so they mature into well-rounded adults who can “draw from multiple fields and think creatively and abstractly,” notes Sriram. ⁣
⁣
3. Develop emotional intelligence: This is also a key moment to help kids learn interpersonal skills such as empathy, kindness, and teamwork, Sriram emphasizes. To cultivate empathy, start by encouraging children to identify and understand their emotions, which opens the door for adults to begin teaching them to consider the feelings of others. ⁣
