NCSSM Step Up to STEM

Step Up to STEM’s Dr. Gerri Cole, along with Extended Learning’s Hannah Isley were on the road recently participating in the Professional Share Fair at The StateView Hotel on N.C. State University’s campus. What a wonderful event to introduce current Kenan Fellows to the many organizations and opportunities available to support their professional growth and ultimately North Carolina’s students and communities!

Extended Learning's Laura Martinez and Chris Thomas traveled to Wake Forest last week to host a STEM session for the monthly STEM-based program called the Ability Club. The Ability Club aims to create a fun, inclusive space where individuals of all abilities can explore hands-on STEM and creative activities. Laura and Chris had fun leading slime creation and sediment bottle activities with the members. Thank you to Katie Haynes for the wonderful opportunity to host a session for the club!

Step Up to STEM’s Dr. Gerri Cole, along with Extended Learning’s Camilla Brothers, were on the road last week visiting and . It was wonderful to share all of the opportunities available to students in Scotland and Robeson County as a result of the Anonymous Trust grant! Thank you for the amazing opportunity!

Step Up to STEM’s Dr. Gerri Cole, along with many Extended Learning colleagues, participated in the Counselor’s Drive-In last week that was held at both NCSSM campuses. Hosted by NCSSM Admissions, the purpose was to share information about the various opportunities that are available for students and teachers at NCSSM. Thank you to NCSSM Admissions for the wonderful opportunity for us to present!

Step Up to STEM was on the road Wednesday at Appalachian State University in Watauga County! Dr. Gerri Cole, along with Extended Learning’s Josh Blackburn, participated in the Appalachian State University’s STEAM Expo that offered interactive displays, campus tours, and on-stage demos to connect students directly to faculty, staff, and students in STEM fields at Appalachian State. Thank you to Ms. Lori Tyler and to the Mathematics & Science Education Center - Appalachian State University for the wonderful opportunity!

This past Saturday, Step Up to STEM’s Dr. Gerri Cole and Extended Learning’s Camilla Brothers participated in the “I Matter Community Rally” at Enfield Middle S.T.E.A.M. Academy in Halifax County. The community celebration focused on empowering and uplifting Halifax County students and reminding them that they matter. Families enjoyed music, food trucks, community vendors, student showcases, and giveaways. Thank you to Ms. Mahalia Carey, Halifax County School District, and to Enfield Middle STEAM Academy for the wonderful opportunity to participate!

Step Up to STEM, along with the Extended Learning team, was on the road this past Tuesday, participating in the PSRC’s Summer Camp Information Night in Pembroke, NC. Thank you to Brian Locklear, for the amazing opportunity to share the wide range of summer camp opportunities available through our Extended Learning Department!

Last week, Step Up to STEM, in collaboration with Hannah Isley, Partnership & Student Support Specialist, visited Githens Middle School’s STEAM Night, where we engaged with students, families, and educators to share the wide range of academic opportunities available through Extended Learning at NCSSM. Thank you to Rebecca Burns for the amazing opportunity!

Step Up to STEM was on the road February 7, along with Caila Holley, Associate Director of STEM Mentoring, participating in the 'Bull City in Black’ HBCU Showcase at the Emily K Center in Durham. It was a wonderful opportunity to engage with students and families and share information about our programs and opportunities that the Division of Extended Learning offers through NCSSM!

Step Up to STEM On the Road ended October with visits to Perquimans County Middle School, River Road Middle School, and Elizabeth City Middle School in Perquimans and Pasquotank Counties! These were great visits to connect with students, teachers, and administrators, sharing information about NCSSM and all of the programs and opportunities that it provides! Thank you to Mrs. Laura Moreland, Mrs. Michelle Flach, and to NCSSM Admissions for letting us tag along!
