Southeastern grad is a community journalism industry leader

A Southeastern graduate has found success over the past 15 years in the journalism industry, both as a publisher and faculty member.
Austin Lewter has served as the director of the Texas Center for Community Journalism at Tarleton State University since August 2021.

He is an instructor of journalism and broadcast at Tarleton and faculty advisor of the student newsroom.

Lewter earned a bachelor’s degree in communication studies from Southeastern where he majored in journalism and was a political science minor.

He also earned a master's degree in mass communication from Stephen F. Austin State University, where he studied with Dr. John Allen Hendricks, a former Southeastern faculty member.

Most recently, Lewter was awarded the 2025 Faculty Excellence Award for Student Success by the College of Liberal and Fine Arts at Tarleton State.

He advocates for the newspaper industry at the national level on the Board of Directors of the National Newspaper Association Foundation.

Lewter and his wife, Jennifer, own and operate the Whitesboro News-Record— the oldest newspaper in Grayson County, Texas.
“I'm just passionate about community journalism,” Austin said. “We are committed to it at all levels of what we do. I dedicate my work at the university to student success and staffing the next generation of newsroom leaders.”

Before transitioning to the classroom, Austin held newspaper leadership roles across Northeast Texas, including stints in Muenster, Lindsay, Whitesboro, Paris, Jefferson, Atlanta, New Boston, Linden, Pittsburg and Dangerfield.

He worked as a freelance sportswriter for multiple publications as an undergraduate while also working on the student newspaper staff of the Southeastern.

“Southeastern is a very special place,” Austin said. “While working for the Southeastern, we had an advisor who inspired our best work. Dr. Allin Means was one of the most gifted faculty members Southeastern has ever seen. I was blessed to spend time with him there. He is a friend and mentor until this day even, though we both left Southeastern a long time ago. I can honestly say the inspiration I received at Southeastern fueled the pursuit of my life's work.”

Austin also credits the social science faculty at Southeastern for a great foundation.

“I minored in political science and took a lot of history courses too,” Austin said. “We were blessed with a brilliant faculty. Drs. Flippen and Melancon, among others, challenged the way we thought and fostered emotional intelligence in our discourse. I’ve built lifetime friendships and professional relationships with several of my Southeastern professors. That is a something you don’t get a larger school, and it is something I strive to immolate with my students.”
Austin is a full-time faculty member at Tarleton where he serves as the lead of the journalism track within the Department of Communication Studies.

He teaches classes in news writing, feature writing, media management, magazine editing, community journalism and broadcast journalism, among others.

Prior to Tarleton, Austin worked as an adjunct instructor at Tarrant County College.

Wonderful accomplishment.
