This is an amazing article! The Science of Reading SHOULD have been the standard all along. Hopefully South Carolina will continue to see growth and do away with harmful reading practices of the past!

Do you have a child who mixes up their lowercase b and d when reading or writing?

Many young children mix these letters up when they are learning to read and write. This is one of the most frequent letter reversal parents and teachers notice.

Most children will grow out of reversing these letters as they begin to become better readers and writers.

Children typically will reverse these letters even into second grade, or around 7-8 years old. If your child is persistently confusing these letters in late second or into third grade or showing other signs of learning difficulties other signs of a learning difficulty (e.g., difficulty with phonological awareness, slow reading fluency, trouble with other letter reversals like “p” and “q” or “m” and “w”e), you may want to consult your child’s pediatrician, teacher, or a reading specialist.

Letter reversals alone are NOT a definitive sign of Dyslexia. Many children with dyslexia do not reverse letters, and many children who reverse letters do not have dyslexia. However, for some individuals with dyslexia, directional confusion can contribute to their challenges.

At Pebbles to Peaks, we use a variety of Multi-sensory activities to help build neural pathways in the brain to cement learning skills. Here are some tips for working with your child at home:

1. Focus on correct letter formation. Lowercase b and lowercase d are formed differently. A great way to practice this is with different textures. You can use sand in a tray, carpet, astroturf, sandpaper, or any rough surface. Use the pointer and middle finger together and only use the tips of the fingers to trace the letters. Your fingertips have more nerve endings!
2. A cute way to remember the difference is to think of b having a “belly”, and d having a “diaper.”
3. You can make a lowercase b by pointing the first finger of the left hand up, while making a fist. Pointing the first finger of the right hand, while making a fist, will look like the lowercase d.

Do you have a child who can read anything, but they are a terrible speller? Poor spelling can impact a student’s writing skills and their self-esteem. Students who struggle with spelling often have difficulties with writing fluency, resulting in frustration and lower grades. Poor spelling sometimes could be a sign of an underlying learning or language difference.
According to the International Dyslexia Association, almost all people with Dyslexia struggle with spelling, even if they did not have trouble with learning to read. Reading and spelling problems are a language learning weakness, not visual weaknesses.
One of the screeners I use when beginning tutoring is a spelling inventory. This looks like an old fashioned spelling test, but it is a useful tool for highlighting gaps and weaknesses in phonological development. By using scientifically backed methods, your child can learn how to overcome these gaps and become a better speller! Not only does this help improve academic success, this can lead to higher confidence levels.
