You submitted the application. Had the interview. Sent the follow-up.
Now you're waiting.
Waiting is part of many career transitions, but it doesn't have to become the only thing you're doing.
One thing I encourage professionals to separate during a transition is:
What's outside my control?
When someone responds
The hiring timeline
Who else applied
The final decision
And then ask:
What can I influence?
Who I connect with…
What skills I strengthen..
Where else I apply…
How and when I follow up…
How I structure my week..
When you're waiting on an outcome you can't control, it's easy to give that one outcome too much of your time, energy, and attention.
Instead, give the waiting period a plan.
I would choose…
ONE thing to build. ONE person to connect with. ONE next step to complete.
Maybe you strengthen a skill, reach out to someone in your network, apply for another opportunity, or finally complete something you've been putting off.
That's the thinking behind my Build While You Wait Plan at The Balanced Professional Works. It's a practical way to help professionals continue moving during career transitions without pretending they can control the final outcome.
You may not control when the answer comes, but you can decide what you continue building while you wait.

💬 While you're waiting, what are you continuing to build?

Before you carry everything unfinished from this week into Monday, take a minute to sort it.
What genuinely needs another step next week?
What matters, but doesn't need your attention yet?
What can you intentionally stop carrying for now?
And one more:
What changed this week that next week's plan needs to account for?
Not everything unfinished automatically deserves a spot on next week's list.
Sometimes protecting your attention means deciding what doesn't need your attention yet.
If you're navigating a work or life transition and everything keeps feeling equally important, this is part of what we sort through during a TBPW Professional Reset, what needs your attention now, what can wait, and what realistic follow-through looks like from there.
💬 What's one thing you're intentionally NOT carrying into next week?

It's back-to-school season here, If your weekly plan keeps falling apart by Wednesday, the problem may not be that you need a better planner. Look at what you're planning around. Meetings, family responsibilities, commute time, interruptions, and your actual available hours all belong in the plan too. This is part of what we do in my 1:1 work. We don't just make a list of goals. We build a plan around your actual work and life, then use our accountability check-ins to adjust it as things change. Book a session with me and I'll help you create a plan.

Being experienced doesn't mean you'll immediately know how to do the next version of your work.
You can be good at what you do and still have something new to learn.
I've worked in different roles throughout my career, and one thing I've learned is this:
A new role can change the systems you use.
A promotion can require you to lead differently.
A career change can make you a beginner again in certain areas.
Running a business can suddenly require you to learn marketing, technology, finances, or operations.
And now, AI is changing how many of us complete work we've been doing for years.
That's a transition too.
I call this a competency transition, when the work, role, or responsibility changes and you need to build or strengthen a skill to move forward.
Instead of telling yourself, “I need to catch up,” get specific:
What is ONE thing I need to get better at over the next 30 days?
Maybe it's using one AI tool effectively.
Leading a difficult conversation.
Learning a new system.
Networking consistently.
Understanding a new responsibility
Pick one.
Give yourself actual time to learn it.
Then practice it consistently enough that it becomes part of how you work.
This is something I reinforce through The Balanced Professional Works. When work or life changes, sometimes the plan needs to change. And sometimes, you need the time, structure, and support to build the skills your new season requires.
Don't confuse learning something new with falling behind.

💬 What's one skill your current season is asking you to strengthen?
