This weekend 2 of our cadets attended the annual American Legion flag retirement ceremony.

A flag retirement ceremony is one of the most powerful reminders that symbols only matter because of what people are willing to stand for.

As the worn fabric is carefully folded and respectfully burned, it isn’t an act of destruction—it’s an act of honor. Every faded stripe and frayed edge represents years of service, sacrifice, and stories that can’t be fully told. The ceremony acknowledges that even the strongest symbols have a lifespan, but the values they represent—freedom, unity, resilience—do not.

Watching a flag retire is a quiet lesson in respect: respect for the past, for those who served under it, and for the responsibility carried by those who remain. It challenges you to ask yourself not just what the flag means, but what you are doing to live up to it.

Because in the end, the flag may be laid to rest—but the ideals it stood for are handed forward.
