The Common App is used by over 1,097 colleges but most families underestimate how complex it actually is.
Here's what surprises parents every year:
The activities list gives your student 10 slots and just 150 characters each to describe years of involvement, leadership, and commitment. Most students undersell themselves here and it costs them.
The additional information section is almost always left blank yet it's prime real estate to explain a grade dip, a family situation, or an extraordinary circumstance that doesn't fit anywhere else.
School-specific supplement essays can't be copy-pasted. Every "Why us?" essay must be tailored, specific, and genuinely compelling and there can be dozens of them.
And with only 5% of Common App schools requiring SAT/ACT scores in 2024–25, test strategy is now a real, consequential decision, not a default.
