✨ Breaking & Rebuilding: The Healing in Growth ✨

These images capture more than just a foot surgery—they show the messy, raw, and necessary steps of transformation.

In SEL, we talk about resilience, discomfort, and renewal. Surgery mirrors those lessons:

Preparation 📝 – marking the skin is like setting intentions; you have to outline where change begins.

Cutting away 🔪 – sometimes you have to remove what no longer serves you, even if it’s painful.

Reconstruction 🧩 – piecing things back together requires patience, trust, and alignment.

Healing 🌱 – the body teaches us that recovery is a process, not an instant fix. Bruises and scars aren’t flaws—they’re evidence of strength.

Just like in life, growth demands discomfort, discipline, and faith in what you cannot yet see.

So whether it’s bones or boundaries, remember: breaking apart is often the first step to building back stronger. 💪🏾✨

We weren’t sure who created the all of the artwork… but the impact? That was loud and clear. 💥While exploring the city during National Training, my colleagues and I stumbled upon a graffiti alley that stopped us in our tracks. The colors. The textures. The bold messages woven into walls—it all told a story we felt, even if we didn’t know the authors.Here’s what we do know:🧬 Graffiti has deep ancestral and cultural roots.Across African traditions, visual storytelling through symbols and sacred markings communicated identity, status, protection, and history. From Adinkra symbols in Ghana to the art of Kemet, our ancestors have long painted purpose into public spaces.📍 In the U.S., modern graffiti grew out of resistance.Emerging from Black and Brown youth in the Bronx during the 70s, it became a voice for the unheard—marking territory, speaking truth, and documenting life in neighborhoods often overlooked. Graffiti became a form of power when other forms were stripped away.🖌️ So while we may not know who held the spray can,we know the language they spoke: freedom, identity, and rebellion.And that matters.✨ Whether it’s painted on train cars, alley walls, or abandoned buildings, graffiti is more than decoration—it’s a pulse of the people.💭 Ask yourself:Who gets to decide what’s art and what’s “graffiti”?How many untold stories are hiding in plain sight?And what messages are you leaving behind in the spaces you occupy?To the anonymous artists who poured into that alley: we saw you. We felt you. And we thank you.

Sure, we might laugh when somebody messes up the steps, but let’s be clear: line dancing is sacred. It’s a whole-body history lesson. It’s therapy. It’s community. It’s resistance in rhythm. ✊🏾🎶Before we were doing the Electric Slide at cookouts or the Cha Cha Slide at graduation parties, our people were already using communal dance to express joy, heal trauma, and preserve culture. 💃🏾🪘🔎 FACT CHECK THIS:Line dancing is rooted in West African communal dance traditions, where synchronized movement in circles or lines honored rites of passage, ancestors, and unity.Enslaved Africans brought those movement practices with them—adapting and preserving them in secret through ring shouts, spirituals, and rhythmic stepping.In the 20th century, Black social clubs, juke joints, and house parties became the heartbeat of line dance evolution—from Motown soul steps to the ‘90s Baltimore Strut to the viral classics we still crank today. 🪩💥So when we step in unison, we’re doing more than “having a good time.”We’re saying:“I see you. I hear you. I got you.”We’re synchronizing struggle, survival, and soul into something that moves us—all together. ❤️‍🔥✨ Every time we slide, stomp, clap, or spin—we honor the legacy. We remember that our joy is a form of resistance and our movement is a reclamation of space.So yes, I was line dancing at National Training.And yes, I hit every single step.
