Visiting the Real World School in Costa Rica was such an inspiring experience. 🌿🇨🇷

It was especially meaningful to connect with Cristina, a fellow founder, and share in the understanding that although our communities may be miles apart, we’re part of a shared movement to restore joy, wonder, and curiosity back into learning.

We loved seeing their philosophy come to life—from their connection to nature and community to watching the kids practice their Ninja Warrior training in preparation for an upcoming competition. Seeing young people learning, moving, challenging themselves, and having FUN was such a beautiful reminder of what education can look like when we expand our idea of where and how learning happens.

So grateful to Cristina and the Real World School community for welcoming us and sharing a glimpse into what they’re building. We left Costa Rica inspired, encouraged, and even more excited about the work we’re doing at Ellemercito.

What educational philosophies inspire Ellemercito?

At Ellemercito, we believe education should awaken purpose, cultivate connection, and nourish the whole child. We are a co-healing, co-learning community that prioritizes youth mental health and creates space for every learner to feel safe, valued, and empowered.

Our approach is rooted in a rich constellation of research-backed, heart-centered philosophies:

Charlotte Mason – for her deep respect for children as whole persons and her emphasis on wonder, habit formation, and living books—narrative-rich texts that stir imagination, evoke empathy, and engage both heart and mind

Paulo Freire – for his belief that education must be liberatory, student-centered, and built on dialogue, reflection, and action—giving learners the tools to question, create, and lead

Erin Gruwell (Freedom Writers) – for her trauma-informed, relationship-driven approach that proves empathy, trust, and storytelling can transform a child’s path

Project-Based, Inquiry-Based, Experiential, Place-Based, and Culturally Responsive Learning – for immersive, meaningful exploration that honors student identity, fosters agency, and connects learning to real lives and communities

Healing-Centered and Trauma-Responsive Practices – for placing nervous system regulation, belonging, and emotional safety at the core of every learning experience

The very first sentence stopped us in our tracks:

For us, that wasn’t just a statement about education—it was the beginning of a journey.

Ellemercito was born in the wake of the pandemic, not because we set out to pioneer a movement, but because we listened to what families were asking for: learning that was more personal, more connected, more flexible, and more human.
