In two weeks soprano Olga Zhuravel Maselli will have her concert at Krystal Gallery&Salon dedicated to Italian Verismo!

Italian verismo (meaning “realism”) is a post-Romantic operatic tradition that emerged in the late 19th century. It focused on gritty, contemporary stories about everyday people—such as peasants and the lower class—rather than kings or mythological figures, emphasizing raw emotion, passion, and violence.

June 27, 3:00 pm at Krystal Gallery&Salon in Dover-Foxcroft.
Scott Wheatley on the piano.

Tickets are $25 on the door.
Or, if you fish to get your tickets in advance, I can post my Venmo in the comments.
Limited sitting capacity.

See you there! 🤗

Two of my students have sang songs written by me.
I am not a composer, but I have an excellent music education which is letting me to figure out how to write the music for a couple of songs 😊
Since I wanted to dedicate this year students’ concert to different’ Ave Maria’ songs and arias, I needed to assign the appropriate pieces to the voices of my students. Grace would sound great in Schubert, but that piece was already taken by Susannah (and it’s actually because of Susannah I had in December the idea of ‘Ave Maria’ concert). Other versions of ‘Ave Maria’ were too challenging for Grace and I just composed one for her.
Beth after our Christmas concert asked me to sing something in Ukrainian next time. And I didn’t find any ‘Ave Maria’ that we would love available online in my language. So, I just wrote another song for Beth.
I find it very fascinating that I didn’t stop with these two songs. Since January I am writing one song every month and I have an idea of having a concert at the beginning of next year. In that concert I would sing 12 songs composed by me and I will call it ‘2026’ or something like that ☺️
I just enjoy this new experience and it all happened thanks to my students! 🎶 🤗🎶

Yesterday we had the end of the year concert of my students.
The concert’s theme was ‘Ave Maria’ and my we performed musical pieces with this name composed by Schubert, Abt, Bach-Gounod, Luzzi, Cherubini, Vavilov/Caccini, Verdi and me.
All my students showed the best of themselves, singing in Latin and in Ukrainian and I am very proud of them!
My student Miranda got sick in the last moment and couldn’t take part of the concert, but we remembered her and all together wished her a speedy recovery.
The Krystal Gallery&Salon was full of the people warmly supporting each performer with open hearts and big enthusiasm!
Thank you very much to my students and their families and friends!
Wishing you a great summer and see you in September!
Big hugs to everyone!

We’ve finished our last lessons for this scholastic year, we rehearsed at the Krystal Gallery&Salon and everyone has tried their pieces on stage. We are ready for our Saturday’s Concert!

In this video Marion is rehearsing her Ave Maria by Bach-Gounod.

Just two weeks until the end of the scholastic year concert of my students!

This time we prepared arias by Cherubini, Vavilov, Abt, Luzzi, Schubert, Bach-Gounod, Verdi etc. all dedicated to the Virgin Mary and the name of the concert is Ave Maria.
My darling student accepted with courage and dedication this challenge and doing their best, singing in Latin and Ukrainian, paying attention to phrasing, dynamics, voice support and breathing.
I am very excited to present to the public the results of our work!

June 6, Krystal Gallery&Salon, Ave Maria!

Music intervals—the distance between two pitches—create mood by triggering psychological and physical responses, often mimicking the emotional cadence of the human voice. Generally, larger intervals (like major 6ths) feel joyful and open, while smaller, closer intervals (like minor 2nds) create tension, fear, or sadness. The balance between stable (consonant) and unstable (dissonant) intervals drives the emotional narrative of music.
Key Emotional Intervals and Their EffectsMinor 2nd (1 half-step): Highly dissonant and ominous, creating intense suspense or discomfort, famously used in Jaws.Major 3rd (4 half-steps): Bright, stable, and happy; a foundation for major chords.Minor 3rd (3 half-steps): Dark, sad, or emotional; a foundation for minor chords.Tritone / Augmented 4th (6 half-steps): Known as “the devil in music,” this interval creates maximum tension, unease, and horror.Perfect 4th/5th (5/7 half-steps): Stable, loyal, and hollow; often feels epic, calm, or resolute.Minor 6th (8 half-steps): Sad and heavy, often used for bittersweet or tragic emotion, such as in Star Wars themes.
How Intervals Shape MoodTension and Resolution: Intervals like the tritone (unresolved) create tension that makes the listener crave resolution, which is satisfied by perfect intervals like the fifth.Voice Mimicry: Research suggests humans associate smaller, downward-swaying intervals with sadness (similar to low-energy speech) and larger, upward intervals with happiness.Major vs. Minor: Major intervals tend to sound lighter, while minor intervals, particularly thirds and sixths, introduce a darker, more somber tone.
While intervals have general emotional connotations, their effect can be altered by context, such as rhythm, timbre, and harmony.

Today I would like to introduce you my former student Liliana Sommariva.

Lili studied with me for a couple of years in Italy 15 years ago.
Now she is a jazz singer and composer with her own jazz quartet having concerts’ tours around Italy.

It’s one of examples of the student with the classical formation developing her own style and the way of interpreting the music.

I am very proud of Liliana and wish her a long and happy life in music!
