Last week, two of our qualifying Speech and Debate students represented us at the National Speech and Debate tournament in Des Moines, IA!

The experience was full of wins: one student was personally offered a full-ride scholarship from a Tennessee State University speech and debate coach, and the other left with next-level inspiration and ideas for next year’s Inform piece. As a coach, I couldn’t ask for more.

When they weren’t competing or practicing their events, we explored Des Moines and made the most out of its unique opportunities: celebrating NSDA’s 100th birthday at the zoo, connecting with Wyoming teams at Dave and Busters, catching a final round of Congressional Debate at the Capital, enjoying some local art, grabbing dinner at Zombie Burger, and even squeezing in a few rides at the amusement park.

It was a week of opportunity, growth, and some well earned fun along the way. So proud of these two and excited for what’s to come.

Nats 2024 was a hit, and what a way to end the season! Malachy competed in Extemp and Storytelling while Carson competed in Impromptu. I am beyond proud of both boys and the hard work they have put in throughout the years to be able to compete at the national level. Of course we mixed in some fun and ate plenty of good food. And, Becky was able to make a surprise appearance and join us! Until next time Des Moine, IA. 🌽

Why Speech and Debate?

If you’d asked me 4 years ago if I ever thought I’d coach speech and debate, I would have laughed raucously. I was introduced to this amazing world when my oldest daughter joined the team as a high school freshman. As a senior, she directed her new freshman sister to join one of her extra curricular activities, and she chose speech. Speech & Debate tournaments are incredible to witness. The energy and level of excellence demonstrated by the competitors gives rise to HOPE for the future. Especially exhilarating are the awards ceremonies, in which those who “make the stage” and place below 1st place receive a traditional 1 clap cheer. 1st place for every event receives a standing ovation. The investment of time made by each student to present is inspirational. This world would be a better place if we operated like the world of Forensics. Our team motto this year is, “bright minds of today~leaders of tomorrow.” And, it’s the truth!
