Emotional intelligence starts with understanding that while we cannot control everything around us, we can control how we respond.

One of our newly trained Anger Management Specialists chose emotional intelligence for their facilitated project, focusing on recognizing emotions, understanding triggers, and choosing healthy responses.

Anger management is not about avoiding anger. It is about learning how to manage it.

Have you ever had so much to say, but your voice began to quiver, your throat tightened, or your body started shaking? Pause. Take a breath and allow your emotions to settle. Pausing is not weakness. It is choosing to respond with intention instead of reacting from emotion.

A moment of honesty: Sometimes we rehearse arguments before they happen because we are trying to organize our thoughts and make sure we get our point across.

We know that once our emotions rise, we may become overwhelmed, forget what we wanted to say, or communicate it the wrong way. But rehearsing an argument can also cause us to enter the conversation already angry and ready to fight.

We are not perfect people, but we are progressing. The goal is to recognize the pattern, regulate our emotions, and rehearse the message instead of the argument.

Growth does not mean getting it right every time. It means becoming more intentional each time.

A trigger log can help you recognize what is happening beneath your emotions.

By recording what happened, how you felt, how you responded, and what you needed in that moment, you begin to identify patterns. That awareness gives you the opportunity to pause, choose a healthier response, and regain control before your emotions take control of you.

Your triggers are not weaknesses. They are signals that can teach you where healing, boundaries, or better coping strategies may be needed.

Track it. Understand it. Manage it.

The way we think influences how we feel, and the way we feel often determines how we act.

In anger management, we learn to slow this cycle down:

Think: What am I telling myself about this situation?

Feel: What emotion is underneath my anger?

Act: What response will help instead of harm?

We may not always control what happens, but we can challenge our thoughts, understand our emotions, and choose a healthier response. Emotional regulation begins when we stop reacting automatically and start responding intentionally.
