Behind the Blooms: Epidendrum oerstedii 🍃
There is something incredibly rewarding about watching a species orchid put on a show. While many are familiar with the classic Epidendrum nocturnum, its close relative Epidendrum oerstedii (sometimes classified under Coilostylis) brings its own unique architecture to the garden.
Native to the warm canopy forests of Central America, it trades thin, reed-like stems for much heavier, stouter pseudobulbs that look beautifully lush even when the plant isn't in flower. But when it does bloom, that striking contrast between the long, spidery greenish sepals and the brilliant white, three-lobed lip is unmatched. And yes—the rumors are true, the night-time fragrance is absolutely intoxicating!

Hay algo increíblemente gratificante en ver a una orquídea botánica lucirse en todo su esplendor. Si bien muchos están familiarizados con el clásico *Epidendrum nocturnum*, su pariente cercano, el *Epidendrum oerstedii* (a veces clasificado bajo el género *Coilostylis*), aporta su propia y singular arquitectura al jardín.
Originaria de los cálidos bosque de Centroamérica, esta especie sustituye los tallos delgados y semejantes a juncos por pseudobulbos mucho más pesados ​​y robustos, que lucen maravillosamente exuberantes incluso cuando la planta no está en flor. Pero cuando florece, ese impactante contraste entre los largos sépalos verdosos —de aspecto arácnido— y el labelo de un blanco brillante y trilobulado resulta inigualable. Y sí: los rumores son ciertos; ¡su fragancia nocturna es absolutamente embriagadora!

There is nothing quite like the elegance of a Cattleya eldorado in full bloom on the patio! Native to the warm, humid lowlands of the Amazon basin, this species is a true masterpiece of nature.

What makes her so special? That striking contrast between the soft, delicate petals and the brilliant, deeply saturated gold disc in the throat, perfectly framed by a crisp white or purple-veined lip. As a beautiful bonus, she fills the patio air with one of the sweetest, most distinct fragrances in the orchid world. ✨

¡No hay nada como la elegancia de una Cattleya eldorado en plena floración en el patio! Nativa de las tierras bajas, cálidas y húmedas de la cuenca del Amazonas, esta especie es una verdadera obra maestra de la naturaleza.

¿Qué la hace tan especial? Ese contraste espectacular entre sus pétalos delicados y el disco de un dorado brillante y profundo en la garganta, perfectamente enmarcado por un labelo impecable (ya sea blanco puro o con sutiles venas púrpuras). Also known as the "Flor de Mayo" (May Flower), this spectacular orchid was officially chosen in 1951 to represent the country's rich natural beauty.
This species is such an important part of our collection, and it is a true pleasure for us to enjoy its delicate substance, and striking color every year. To celebrate this special day, we are so happy to share some of them with all of you! 💚
