Our Friends group went out on an evening hike after our monthly meeting. We were looking for American woodcock, which have been migrating through and have distinctive calls ["preent"] and quirky mating/worm-hunting routines. We watched videos and listened to recordings of their calls. While we heard a call or two, we didn't see any.

It was a marvelous evening.

And we got these pictures for our album cover.

We held our annual Winter Fun Day, which included a hike (sadly not enough snow to snowshoe), a Superb Owl [a play on "Super Bowl"] presentation, and chili feasting.

Rebecca gave an engaging and informative owl presentation.

And Dave led the hike.

Winter Fun Day will be happening this Saturday, February 7th, at the Wapsi River Center. Come and go on a Naturalist lead Winter Hike or learn about our Superb Owls of Iowa at 10:30 A.M.! Two of our live Animal Ambassador owls will make an appearance during the Superb Owl program. These programs are free to attend. As December nears, and “Black Friday” sales messages fill your inbox and social media feed, please pause. Consider buying less, buying local, and supporting small businesses and not for profit organizations.
The Friends of the Wapsi has a great gift shop in our new eco center. We carry cards by artist Craig Carlson, suitable for holiday cards. Nature books and guides, candles and other green gofts for adults, and plenty of books, puppets, & toys for kids.
New is some nature themed jewelry…cicada earrings anyone?
We accept cash, check or credit cards. Open Saturday 10-2. See you soon!
