Several media outlets, including TMZ Sports, reported former NFL quarterback Tony Romo’s first-offense OWI citation on I-43 in Milwaukee over the weekend. The story has put a national spotlight on Wisconsin’s impaired driving laws.

While high-profile stops always grab headlines, driver reinstatement is a process millions of Americans navigate every year. In-car breathalyzers have stopped 5.7 million drunk driving attempts nationwide, according to MADD.

Even though Romo’s official BrAC isn't public, here is how levels work in WI:
🔹 0.08% - 0.149% BrAC ---> Civil fines and license revocation, though an IID allows immediate
🔹 0.15%+ BrAC: ---> Mandatory 1-year IID requirement.

How long does alcohol stay in your system? And could it affect your IID the next morning? ⏰

The answer = longer than most people expect.

On average, alcohol may remain detectable in breath for up to 24 hours after drinking. Blood alcohol concentration may decrease at roughly 0.015% per hour, but that rate varies for everyone, and nothing speeds it up.

For IID users: even trace levels above the device's set point (often around 0.02%) can prevent your vehicle from starting. That's the device working exactly as it should. Protect your progress by playing it safe when it comes to drinking.

Non-alcoholic beer may show up on a breathalyzer - and even though it may feel like the safest bet, it may still throw off your program.

Some non-alcoholic beers contain small trace amounts of alcohol. If you test immediately after drinking one, there's a chance the device picks up residual mouth alcohol and logs a failed result.

The easy fix: wait a few minutes before your breath test. That small pause can make a real difference in getting a clean result.

When in doubt, give it a moment. Your progress is worth protecting.
